Well this took a bad turn, didn't it? That's too bad. But if it's not working, it's not working. You have to do what's right for you and your pack. Period. I always think of that when I get an urge to add to mine. Or something comes along, like a pig LOL if it's going to disrupt our peace of heaven, then I have to pass it by. If your dogs don't get along with the pig, or the pig with your dogs, then she'll have to go. God forbid one of your animals gets hurt by the newcomer. That would not be good. I can't believe they said that they were just butcher it. Maybe they said that to tug at your heart. Not really intending to do it. But I guess now you're in a dilemma. How do you get the pig off your property before any more Mayhem? They won't come for her and they can't contain her.

It’s not so much that my dogs have an issue.. they’re just interested (except for Rio who couldn’t care less) and the pig does not like them getting close. Either to itself or me.

You mean she's actually being protective of you from the dogs?

I don’t think she’s being protective as much as she’s always next to me wanting food, and the dogs want to be next to me and the pig does not like the dogs being close to her. It is what it is I tried and you are right, it’s not worth disrupting the peace. Plus my boyfriend brought something up too.. since she is loose, if a car were to hit her I’d be liable for damages. Now that’s on them.

It might sound mean but, the only way I’ve been able to keep her out of the yard is with a BB gun. It’s not a “real” as it’s battery powered, and I wouldn’t say it hurts (I’ve been shot with it numerous times) but it does sting and is unpleasant. Not much unlike a mild shock from an ecollar. Now she just hears the noise and goes away.

Hot wire is used on most farms for pigs and other live stock. Perhaps you could suggest that to your neighbor because any way you look at it, the situation is not good. I hate the idea of you having to defend your property from the marauding hog. That is the responsibility of the owner. I feel bad for the pig too but your neighbors have a responsibility to contain their animals from others properties. Then again you are in that part of the country where the folks do not have the knowledge or desire to properly care for animals and they just don’t care.
Are they the same neighbor that the kids come to your home to play with the dogs?

When I lived a short time in Claxton, Ga they had issues with the wild hogs. They were Piney Roots and started breeding with the Russian blues that were brought over. Those pigs were destructive and very mean tempered. I got thrown from my horse on a trail when the horse smelled one close by. The horse hauled ass and left me stranded with a feral piney root boar hog. The musk off that thing was overwhelming. I was looking at all these pine trees trying to figure out if I could climb up and hang on till the hog left. I found an old deer stand and climbed up in that. That boar would not leave and it was starting to get dusk and I wanted to get home. I had my .38 in a shoulder holster and it took 3 shots to drop him. By this time I am carefully coming down and my friends were coming down the trail looking for me. The horse came back to the barn without me but no one noticed because I did not let them know I was going riding. They went to the barn and saw Zanzibar fully tacked and standing in the barn and then went looking for me. The guys wanted the meat but it was tainted with all that musk and you couldn’t pay me to eat it.

Moral to owning pigs is plenty of room and a pen they cannot escape from!
Oh and stay away from Feral hogs, they can be deadly.

I’ve been told they’re going to fix the fence for days now. Nothing has been done, and I can tell you they aren’t going to put out money for a hot wire. It’s getting really old, really fast. If I call and tell them to come get it they send the kids over (yes, it is the same neighbors) and they put it back in the fence but what’s the damn point if it’s just going to escape again?

I’m more familiar with feral pigs, I grew up hunting them in Florida. They’re nasty, and you’re right boar meat is useless. My parents once had to shimmy up a pine tree when a sow with babies went after them.

Well, shoot, something that seemed fun has turned into a real problem! I'd stick with the BB gun since she already knows the sound and runs. AND I'd call her owner EVERY time she is there. Maybe she'll get tired of the game. Maybe. Is she over there making a nuisance of herself while you are gone at work?

Yes, she is always over here. Even if she runs off after a shoot off, she ambles back over shortly after. I have kept all food up and removed the straw. I thought briefly about calling animal control but I don’t want these people to feel like they need to retaliate against me as I have other animals to worry about.

All that being said, I think it may be solved. After the pig came back over while my dogs were outside and refused to leave my barn, I texted the wife asking what their plans were with the pig because I was tired of it being in my yard. She replied telling me I need to talk to her husband because it’s “his” pig :eye roll:. So I said ok tell your husband to pick up some plastic wrap because I’m about to shoot and hang it, since nobody wants to do anything about it. I tell you what the whole tune changed and it was sorry this sorry that and the pig pen turned into a construction site by the whole family in about five minutes.

Sometimes it takes a bit of psychology to get their attention. Would have loved to see them becoming quick to get that pen built. Could have been done months ago but at least now it’s done.

Well, I'll be! I guess it was just getting too comfortable for them. With a little threat they changed their tune real fast! Well good for you! Hopefully things remain peaceful at your house.

Nobody wanted to do anything about the pig so I did. Took a few hours of work but nothing went to waste.

Yes. It’s not the path I would’ve chose if I had a choice but I really didn’t have any other option. The neighbors literally would do nothing, and I couldn’t take being bombarded by it every time I went outside, going after the dogs, stinking up my barn and scaring my ducks, and rooting up my yard. I tried everything I could think of to get her to stay off my property and nothing worked. As I said it’s definitely not my first choice, but no pig is worth my peace of mind.
