Looking for a good puppy food

Niki, I have a very naive question, only because it has been 20 years since I had a puppy: why does the size of the kibble matter?
Its easier to a large puppy to gulp vs chew. I hear Nero coughing if he is eating enthusiastically. He didn't have the same issue when I fed Wellness Large Puppy Complete Health. He had runny stools though due to too much grain.

I saw that brand at Petco the other day. I was turned off from it because they had a GIANT display, an entire aisle of Dr. Foster Smith. I tend to wonder why they need to do ALL THAT to get you to buy their product. Im sure it's great, just turned me off!

Same reason that some CRAP pet food bags have pretty pictures of steaks, fish and colorful kibble!

That's because Petco just started to sell the product (Drs. Foster Smith has always been exclusive to their site before this year) so they were advertising it as new, lol. And making a big deal out of it so people would know, I'm sure. They've never done that before, and as far as I've seen don't advertise it otherwise.

Taste of the Wild has pictures of what's inside. Nicer pics, but those same type. It's just advertising. People buy a product a lot so then the company can afford more in the marketing budget. That's why advertising should never be used as a reason to buy a product, or not. It could be bad or good. Research and word of mouth is always the best. I spend hours researching foods, medications, everything. I think I spend more time on my dogs than myself, lol. No, wait. I don't think, I know, haha.

I know dogs for smaller breeds tend to have small kibbles and have noticed many large breed foods have larger kibbles. If Nero throws up his food, which he does sometimes if he's eaten too fast, the kibble is whole with TOTW and wasnt so bad with larger kibble food.

How big is the TOTW? I've never seen any.

I know even smaller dogs have that issue with swallowing too much too quick. Chewbacca often does that. Drives me nuts. The larger kibble helps them (the bigger dogs) teeth too because they have to work. Our vet wanted us to switch Mila to the Science Diet large kibble (personally dislike that brand) for that reason. He didn't realize she loved chewing branches, and had more than enough teething items, lol. She had no issues teething.

Earthborn has a large breed kibble that the pieces are about the size of a nickel, maybe a hair larger and its round and slim. My guys take their time eating this.

But I think most people buy because of pretty pictures and don't do their own research. Because these food companies spend so much in advertising. And a lot of these foods are Crap! Get by the pretty pictures and research the ingredients. I'm sure these Crap food companies would not sell any foods if they put a road kill or euthanized pets on the bag to make their meat meals, that they get form rendering companies!
Yes for sure I spend more time on research for our Dobes and cats than on myself!

If they eat too fast you can use a slow feeder. Good call on not feeding Science Diet!

So in order from left to right:
Skittles's food - Wellness Core Original cat
Nero's food - TOTW pacific stream puppy
Nero's treats - Zukes mini naturals
A US dime

Thanks. Chewbacca's not always like that. He's just a dodo head, lol. When my mom comes home after being gone (his "momma") he tends to do it. Just inhales. smh I don't know what the heck he's thinking will happen if he takes his time. That boy is just a weirdo.

That TOTW looks similar in size to the food I feed Mila. I also use the cat food they have for our cat, and the kibbles resemble the same as the Wellness core. Good sizes. Thanks for the pic. That is always one of the things I look at too when buying. My 14.5 yr old pom mix can't handle big kibble. Soon I may have to switch her to moistened kibble.

The wellness core puppy was about the size of the zukes treat and the wellness complete health large breed puppy was a little bigger than the dime. Totw is cheaper though than both. There is more stool but Nero likes the food, and his stools are pretty solid. So if I have to pick up some more poop, I'll live. Lol!

Have you tried just adding water to the food and letting it sit a little bit? Unless she needs more calories to keep weight on?

Little dogs have little mouths so may need smaller kibble. It's why pet food companies make small bites or speciality food for small dogs. Sometimes the only difference is the size of the kibble but little dogs have different nutritional too.

Does the Size of Dog Kibble Matter?

But according to one study, all sizes of dogs seem to prefer large kibble

When it comes to kibble, even little dogs think like big dogs

It doesnt surprise me that dogs would prefer larger chunks of food though.

That's what I meant about moistened kibble. I add a little water, warm it, and then let it soak while it cools enough for her to eat. :) Thankfully the Drs.Foster Smith food is a disc so it's much easier for her to chew. Breaks fairly easy. I think the little ones were the big help for me in teaching Mila not to gorge or inhale. She watches them pick piece by piece and takes her time like they do, lol.

Ah okay, i thought you meant buy one that was already moist. We did that with my first dog as a kid.
When I think back to even how much I learned about dog nutrition from then (about age 8) to when I was done high school its amazing. Now I know even more. I love learning. I wish I had the space, time, energy, and money for raw but I dont. Until then we do the best we can with what we have. :D

Not to hijack anyone's thread, but does anyone have an opinion on blue wilderness's taste of the wild? I use the rocky mountain red (puppy) for my little guy but he seems to still have some dandruff.. any ideas? Bad food?
