Last Sunday Kali started acting strange and not her chipper self. And then I noticed her right eye was running and she wouldn't open it all the way. And it had taken on a gray blue color that was very frightening.
I called the vet on Monday and he asked for a couple of pictures. When he saw them they said to come in the next day.
When I brought her in he said that he suspected glaucoma.
He said the pressure in the eye should be 20 or below. When he tested her, that eye was 60! The other eye tested at 15. Quite a difference!
So he started her on 25 mg of Carprofen for 7 days. And he called in a prescription for some eye drops that were a combination of two ingredients. He said it should bring the levels down quickly. If it is glaucoma. He said it can't be sure until we see if it comes down. If it doesn't then it could be something else.

So I went to pick up the eye drops and the girl at the counter said, did you research the price on this? I said, nooooo, whyyy? She said, because its like $105. My face went like this
and she said, well let me see what I can do. I said, put it through my insurance! LOL I know they couldn't do that since it was for a dog but she came back and said, $20. 
I was like, oh my gosh, that's wonderful, thank you so much! I don't know how she managed that but now that I realize this is a lifelong thing that I'm going to have to do I'm hoping I can still get it for $20 every time I go in. 
That was Tuesday. The vet wanted to see me again today to see if the levels had dropped and they did. They dropped down to 40. Still not perfect but just the fact that it is dropping he said this is glaucoma. And yes, she will be taking the drops the rest of her life. I told him about the cost and he said, Well once we level her off at a good pressure, maybe we can let go of one of the ingredients which he suspected was the most expensive. He said she may never go back down to 20 and below but if we can maintain the lower pressure we'll see about the medication. If anything we will shop around and see if we can find it someplace else cheaper. But first let's get this at a maintenance level.
I asked if she was blind in that eye and he says if anything she's not seeing very well. She may see shadows. She still blinks. And the swelling of the entire eye has gone down a bit now that the pressure is down. He said sometimes the eye is so swollen that even though they can blink, the eye can't close all the way. And, of course, that causes drying of the eye and then you run into the eye developing ulcers and OMG, anything else?
So I have another appointment in a week to have her checked again. Oh and by the way, every time he uses that instrument to check her pressure, it cost me $54.50! I was really thinking today it would be no charge since it was just kind of a check up. But nope. $54.50. I told the girl I can't believe every time he does three Puffs in the eye it cost me $54.50! LOL I said that's crazy. I know the instrument is expensive but it was probably paid off a couple of times already. Okay, I don't know that for sure.
But I bet if it was they'd still keep charging you $54.50! 
She was a little more chipper and this morning. She actually wanted to go out to the barn with me. But I just didn't think it was a good idea with that eye the way it was. I didn't want to get any dirt or dust in there until I knew what we were dealing with. I just want to be more careful with it until it's a little more healed. Breaks my heart every time I look at her and that blue eye.
I just went in to check on her. I have my house more or less divided so that Annie is on one side and she is on the other. I did this before this even happened. It was just a way of keeping Annie contained on the tile floor. But it also ended up to be good to keep Kali out for her own protection. Annie is just so big and wants to play with her but it's just not going to happen . The size difference and being a puppy, Annie is just too playful. And rough. When we got Kali at 5 months old, Buddy was 3 years old and pretty settled. He was never as playful as Annie is now. So that combination at that time worked well. Being 13 years old now and 11 lbs, she just can't keep up with a 50 lb puppy.
So this separation works well. Most of the time Kali is sleeping on our bed. Sometimes she goes in the basement. I just went in there and she didn't hear me. Sometimes I think her hearing is going too.

I gently touched her and she still didn't move! Okay now she was scaring me. She finally picked up her head but she really looks sleepy.
