European Hypertypes

Okay so as some of you may know, I live in Spain.
There's currently a huge growth in hypertype Dobermans here. Almost EVERY Doberman being bred, is a hypertype. These so called "breeders" are breeding their +110lbs Dobermans, who look like mastiffs, claiming they are DCM free, when they haven't got a single holter reading on them, not even ONCE.

This is Krampus de Astur Galian, 2 years old, 115lbs. He's being bred.


Next one is Kronoss del Valle de las Aguilas. Just look at the pic...he was 120lbs (I think he passed away) but is still actively being bred, had his last litter just 1 month ago.


These breeders claim their dogs are healthy, not obese, and look exactly how a European Doberman should look like. I tried confronting them about breeding these out of standard great dane mixes, and got called out.

What do you guys think? Do these dogs look okay to you? Or do you find them to be too big?
I must add, Doberman puppies here tend to reach 90-100lbs by the time they turn 6-7 months...I can't imagine how much pressure their joints are under...it pains me to see what they are doing to this amazing breed. I must add they are all over 30" inches tall.
All of these dogs have Pride of Russia pedigree in them, which just makes it EVEN worse.

I'm not bashing big or out of standard Dobermans, I know it can happen sometimes. I just don't think it's okay to PURPOSELY breed them to be bigger.
Bigger is not always better.

I totally agree with you. The FCI standards are slightly bigger but all Dobermanns should be bred within the breed standard. None of this breed should be over 100# regardless where they came from and I know quite a few who have passed at way too early an age from different health issues that were never tested for before breeding.

I agree with you 100%. No these dogs do not look okay to me. Yes I find them too big. Not only too big but they've lost all their athleticism, muscle tone and probably couldn't compete in any type of competitive sports. They do look like Great Dane crosses, nothing what the standard calls for.

I've had my say, I apologize to anyone who has or wants this type of dog. I know we all have different ideas of what we want in our personal dogs, but responsible breeders will not ever stretch type to suit buyers.

It's good to know that not everyone in Europe agrees that this is a good thing. Also, the true working IGP3 Dobermans from European countries are still normal size, hard muscled athletic dogs doing what they were bred to do. These Hypertypes seem to be a fad and are becoming more & more popular here in the U.S.

The Dobe in the first pic is better than the one in the second. The first one's snout is overdone.

The second one's snout makes it look very much like a Dane, and anyone notice how flat/hare-like its paws are?

Overdone and out of standard 110%! The second one looks short too which throws off the rest of its heavy look and head. Almost like a bulldog with short body and big head. Those dane muzzles bother me, you sometimes see them here too but not that extreme.

I am seeing body mass without muscle definition, and 4 legs that look inadequate. Be interesting to see them move. I am not a breed snob by any stretch, but don’t sell me a Great Dane and call it a Dobermann.

I don’t find that appealing at all. Just as @Ravenbird states, where is the athleticism?? I see a chunk, overweight mass.
One of these days I will post a video of my monsters running at full stride, zigging and zagging- they always amaze me with their speed and agility. Those blobs try that and there will be ruptured ACL’s and weakened heart walls bursting.

I know quite a few of them who have died at 4 years or less and that's unacceptable to me.

Hypertype is extremism of a type. Or like far right/left. But with Euro dobermans.

Joker gets called a Euro A LOT. He is a big dog and if I get him below 96 lbs, he looks like a street dog. He does have a Euro Great Grandsire.

Yeah it's the new name for warlock, we use it a lot around here to refer to them.

I realize I'm very late to this conversation. It just popped up when I goggled something else about IGP. The FCI standard is actually slightly less in weight and the same in height. FCI male weight 88lbs to 99lbs, height at withers 26.77 "to 28.35 ".
AKC make weight 75lbs to 100lbs and height at withers 26" to 28" 27 1/2 being ideal.

Exactly, yet most Europeans are MUCH taller than that. I've had some Dobermann owners comment on how small mine is, when he's 28'5'" and balances between 95-100lbs like wth? They want DoberDanes atp. I only trust ONE single breeder from my country (Spain) and that's Dobermann de Covalta, the rest are ALL hypertype breeders, no exception. No echos, no holter, no working titles, nothing AT ALL.

FCI or AKC, It doesn't seem to matter to BYB's, no matter which side of the pond. They are selling fads de jour, not to people who actually care about the breed.
