Ear cropping

IMG_3924.webp IMG_4070.webp My Doberman puppy had his ears cropped at 9 weeks old using a laser. Since I'm new to all this I was thinking the laser was going to be a big difference but he had bleeding from one of them for a couple days. We went in for his first post op and they said they don't tape them until the edges are healed but that his ears needed to be formed. They tried the posts and after a few shakes they kept coming out so they decided to wrap him up. He's been in a cone for a week thank goodness because he's been scratching the cone like crazy like it's his ear but now he's in this head wrap thing and the cone. Makes me feel guilty even doing that. I'm just hoping this wrap thing stays on. They didn't want them covered but I guess they didn't have a choice. They aren't actually taped yet just formed they said.

Good questions!

Hmm. I am not a fan of completely encasing the ears in tape. The fact that they've done it while the incision line is still healing concerns me. (not that I claim to be an expert).

Veterinarians are notorious for not providing good crop aftercare. The biggest no-no they seem to perform is wrapping the ears in too much tape.

You don't typically need a cone on a Dobe after cropping.

There is a method of taping the ears to a styrofoam cup placed on top of the head – with no tape touching the incision line. A lot of breeders do this.

I have to take my boy out for his late night walk now, but I know more people will chime in tomorrow about this.

I'm sure he's fine for now, and congratulations on a great looking Dobe! I like his coloration and face!

Is he vwd cleared, carrier or positive ? I just ask because if he had bad bleeding it could be a result of being vwd positive. As for forming, my males Ares was put in a cup with the edges out able to breathe, this is to reduce chance of infection. He was not posted till edges were completely healed, I recommend you posting them yourself. My female I just got was not put in anything, she gets her stitches out Wednesday and will be posted once the edges are completely healed.
Imo different dogs require different things, Ares was itchy and needed a donut to keep him from ripping the stitches, my female has barely scratched hers. Ares was hand cut, Athena was also hand cut. I used neosporin with lidocaine on Ares to numb his ears, I haven't had to use anything for Athena. Many will recommend not using anything on the ears because it can show the stitching or something, I don't have that with my male, like I said I believe it depends on the dog. You do what you have to I guess. I also would probably take all that get up off and just let them hang till he's healed up, it won't harm any chance of standing, what would harm them standing is not posting for as long as needed.

Not to put different words in your mouth, but I think what you probably meant was "...because it can slow the stitching..." instead of "...can show the stitching..."

I think I recall a member here called Archer advising against Neosporin and I suspect that's what you're talking about.

I don't personally know either way.

My puppy was in a cone while his stitches were healing and I'm glad he was. He was constantly trying to scratch at them. He would have destroyed his own ears. I say unwrap them to breathe, but absolutely keep the cone on until the stitches come out.

I am positively NOT an expert!

Thanks! They did blood work before his surgery so that all came back perfect. They haven't actually taped them yet because they didn't want to cover them until healing but they said they just wanted to start forming them. They tried doing it a different way with the edges being exposed but he kept shaking them out of his ear. He tries scratching at them nonstop so I'm glad the cone was on now but I can't wait until it can come off!

Thanks! Exactly how my guy is. They said even when they start taping he might have to wear it for a little bit. Can't wait until it's all done and over. Hope it doesn't take too long!

Both my two wore the Elizabethan collar when the ears were cropped. The crop vet sent them home with ears down so I put the cup on their head and glued the ears to it, leaving the suture site exposed to air. I also kept the collar on because both mine scratched constantly. I removed the collar when I started posting because it pushed the ears forward. Be sure you order the backer rod (foam caulk saver), torbots glue, unisolve adhesive remover, Zonas tape. All these items can be purchased from Amazon.
Most crop vets; while they do a beautiful job cropping, they are rather inept with posting. They tend to follow the old rule of if you don't know how to tie a knot, then tie a lot, except they do that with tape. Very little tape is required.
My concern with their wrap job is the sutured edges are covered. It would be far better to have the ears hang without tape than be covered like that. I would also keep the collar on so they don't catch a suture with their paw as they attempt scratching.

Ha! I have never heard that phrase before, but it accurately describes me when tying anything. I never learned hot to tie knots, so I just, well, tie a lot of them to try to be secure if I really need it to hold!

They were hanging down for a week with nothing on them and at his one week follow up they wanted to form them. I guess they were concerned with the floppiness because at first they said they weren't doing anything just yet as far as putting them up yet.

Hahahaha Tad, being around boats all my life we learned early on to tie all the different knots.
I have a shadow box of knots to remind me. Hahaha

Also use this time to look at posting videos and decide what posting method you are going to use. And get all the supplies that way you're ready to go when it's time to start posting. I say this because some of the tapes and Unisolve can only be bought at medical supply stores or Amazon. We had to wait a week to get all our stuff delivered.

What a cute little girl! I don't have much to add to what's already been said, but it won't hurt a thing to let them hang until the stitches are out and you're ready to start posting. It doesn't look to be a real long crop so I don't think you'll have a problem getting them to stand using one of the methods posted above.

Was it just a basic blood work up for surgery? And was it specific for Vwd? It's a genetic test and a clotting test.
I would be concerned about covering the laser cuts with any bandages.

I'm not exactly sure but I know his parents were negative. I would think they would check for that before his ears being cut off but I'm not sure.
