Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Have never seen that here local. Or in the hills of Yorba Linda back when there were still hills and not houses😂
I have seen it down in Temecula.
We were at a wedding venue owned by an old San Diego surfer dude.

He had all the cool stuff down there, those melons just pop up here and there. He has giant oaks, and those giant boulders the are are known for have the tell tale signs of native habitation. Holes worn into the rock where they grind grains.
He also had a native plant I wasn’t familiar with that also just pops up here and there.
Had white trumpet flowers and prickly balls growing.
If you know, you know.
If you don’t it’s called by several names.
My wife has an app on her phone that tells what plant something is and how well it is or isn’t growing if you point the camera at it.
Jamestown weed. Or Jimsonweed.

It’s poisonous to dogs, and if a human eats enough of it it will kill.
Apparently in small doses it will send people into a high that lasts a couple weeks, and the person will have no memory of any of their shenanigans while they were high.
Natives used to use it in ceremony.

Wander down any old stream with boulders under coastal oaks from the mountains to the ocean and find morteros...maybe the metate; grinding stone tgo collectors have grabbed them all...
its always a good feeling to sit there and imagine Moms looking after the kids playing, grinding acorn into flour...how many hundreds of years before...you can feel the spiritual aura I think, or imagine...what about you?

Yep, stay away from that Sacred Datura. Long known for hallucinogenic property when seeds steeped as tea. Tragic accident 25 years ago when two highschool buddies did so, got so wacked they stripped to their undies and one wandered into desert at Joshua Tree, died from heatstroke.
One thing I did not know until reading the link is they are night pollinated by Hawk Moths...

Pretty sure I can guess the "spiky ball"

Whats the phone app, @Gelcoater
Sorry, to thread hog, but I geek out on this stuff. Despite the mountains, sagebrush, and desert seeming sort of unimpressive compared to other places like the Rockies, High Deserts of Four Corners, the Appalachian range, the amazing Florida swamps etc...If you slow down and look, its amazing here...too

San Diego county is a biodiversity treasure, the most in continental US according to Nature Conservacy...

I’d say that’s probably correct, anywhere there’s been oaks growing for centuries you’re bound to find evidence of people using the resources.
We have some less than 3 miles from here, holes in rocks where people ground nuts and grains and pictographs as well.

Sandy Eggo has some nice weather, no doubt things grow in abundance down there, plant, animals and people.
More biodiversity and history is lost than we will ever know.

I was cleaning stalls this morning when my husband told me to come and see a large praying mantis! I said, I haven't seen one all year! So I was excited to go get some pictures. And she. was. big!

Whadda looking at, girlie??

Smile for the camera!

I can't say she's pretty. More like something out of The Terminator!🤪🤣

Wow! Color, definition, the wx and time info...
Trail cams sure have come a long way!
I think it depends on how much you pay. Ours is a cheapie model, "buy one, get 2 free." 😂 It shows us what the animal is, fairly clear, can't see the license plate on any cars driving up our driveway, pretty grainy on nighttime photos.

We only get IRs since the white flash ticks bears off and they will destroy the camera.
I never had a problem with the white flash scaring the wildlife. TPICT0507.webpPICT0062 (3).webphe bears have messed with my IR cameras just as much as the white flash ones. These are old photos from my old camera, sure liked those old cameras. Bears never messed with the old cameras at night, and rarely during the day, I think we just have more bears now, since Calif has banned use of dogs to hunt bears.

Uff da! Thats a big ole boar!
Almost looks like a brown bear with that hump?
But the narrow face vs dished face means its a black.

There's an effort to reintroduce them to CA, symbol of the state flag.

Walking the beach after sunset at low tide, checking the weather - you can make out the leading edge of approaching low system...far off on the horizon...

found a dead sea lion deposited by the high tide...

Its common for these to be killed by red tide organisms, but this time of year with the very warm water the sea lions are having to swim farther out to feed on anchovy that are further out. This may have been an oldster weakened, at the end of its days...🥲

BTW I had called the SeaWorld Stranded Sea Mammal phone number that referred me to the NOAA Fisheries number that handles Dead Animals reports.
NOAA got back to me next day and I sent photos and a location.
They explained "they dont do removals, only log the reports"-
And "it's up to the jurisdiction where found."

"Some bury the carcasse, some remove, some let nature take its course."
As the NOAA person texted, "hopefully the tide will take the body out..."

Because the surf and tide build up the summer beach and block the lagoon outlet (which has been un-naturally dammed and thus can't flush itself...the carcass would most likely end up in a patch of water that gradually grows more toxic until a winter storm(s) dump enough rain to violently overflow the dam and then the rush of water will snake thru the sand, cutting 8-12 deep channel and empty the overflowing lagoon, and accumulated storm water, pesticides, herbicides, trash from the suburbs around it.

That particular spot is patrolled by lifeguards from two cities and the State, so I called the local FD and left a report in the AM.

They said "someone had called the day before, but unable to say next steps".

So, for the heck of it, and to get a daytime pic before the storm, I went out just at morning high tide to find the sealion gone- looks like heavy equipment tracks- looking like a front loader came and took it away...

Or budied it...
This pic is looking at lagoon outlet deadpool.IMG_3574.webp
And out to sea, see the hiking stick? Same view as nite before.

So someone made the good call, imho.

See the incoming tide at peak just spilling inland over the bar? Tide is dropping now until next Spring Tide near Turkey Day will be higher and then the highest in December as the Earth approaches closet point in orbit around sun..."King Tide"...

In a day or two of rain the lagoon MAY begin to empty...we will see how much of that creeks drainage has collected in runoff.

For sure we needed the rain for the very dry open space preserves and parks that were tinder for a wildfire...thanks Mother Nature!

Here is the "wildfire risk map" from Windy

Kewl, huh?

NOTHING more STINKY than a, very, dead seal that the dogs have rolled on.

For about 6 months, when I was 16, lived in Imperial Beach with some cousins. One day at the beach the dogs discovered a, long dead seal. Man, that stink was worse than skunk.
