Beorn; Young male Dobbie needs a home!

Hello all, I am looking for a step-up home & trainer for my ~18mo male Doberman we rescued in Jan. My wife and I fostered then adopted him, trained and acclimated him to an active household (2 kids, 3 other dogs, 8 chickens, and 3 feral cats). This is a hard decision however we've recently been inundated with financial/business demands that limit how much we can exercise and train him to what he needs & deserves. I grew up in a obedience-comp trained dobbie household so I know the gaps we cannot fill. This will all be worth it if I can find a time-devoted and experienced owner that he can be a companion to!

More on Beorn's personality development:
He's had a fair amount of obedience and reactance training since we adopted him, mostly thanks to my wife. We've also provided him some professional training by the same that trained our service dog. He's super smart and easy to train; he's food and praise motivated. We've been able to walk him off-leash w/ treats & training and he runs freely with our other dogs in a nearby field without jetting off (although he needs this daily and we've been unable to provide that lately). We've also started e-collar training a couple months ago which is going well. He loves kids and is good with every human we've had over thus far. He gets along well with our other dogs except he has FOMO and competes for attention at times. His play drive is high but also loves to cuddle with his humans! He is crate-trained and goes in his crate on command because he knows he's getting treats. He sleeps in his crate every night and doesn't fuss. He loves to play tug-o-war, finding his ball, fetching a ball (he is learning to drop it), pulling daddy on a skateboard, and training to do hind-end circles for food (front paws on a step).

If you are interested, I'd love to connect and discuss further! Thank you for your help!

Regards

Corey

I know someone in North Carolina who just lost her boy recently, and is hoping to get another dobe. California may be too far though.

PLEASE be careful with choosing a new home for him. There are some very unscrupulous people out there! Is there a no kill shelter that can take him? That's always a good option because they will carefully vet any potential adopters.

Sorry to hear of their loss! Beorn’s a great boy and loves to be with his person. Not sure if your acquaintance would want to fly out here but he’s fairly chill outside of play mode.

Thx. Even good quality no kill shelters are emotionally taxing for dogs. Our experience with shelters is they don’t really eval how well the owner is matched to the breed, they just make sure the dog is “ok” with the person.

Feel for ya...tuff call.
I applaud your care and due diligence on the rehome...i read dobes tend to be less able to re-bond without good understanding...an all breeds shelter may work but perhaps you'd have better chances at a breed rescue.

Have you checked in with DPCA referred dobe rescues? There is just one now in CA,
Another in AZ but no idea how they are doing, capacity...

I'd be interested in your feedback on that.

Is your Service Dog a dobe, or?

Interesting comment on the behavior work and obedience background...like to pick your brain on that and SD...but no rush;sounds like a busy time,

I'll keep my ear to the ground here in SoCal- there used to be a non DPCA but well regarded dobe rescue lady in Escondido...
have to update my info on that.

Have you tried posting on the FB dobe groups for your area?
The Socal DPCA chapter moved north -Aztec something...might try posting there.

Good luck.
PM if you like.

Agatha was 2 1/2 when I got her and have had no issues with her bonding with me and fat girl...

A lot of the rules and such those places have would disqualify many people that 'might' be able to offer a good home. Example: For many years I did NOT have a fenced in back yard...

But still managed to successfully raise and train multiple Dobermans over those years to stay inside my yards boundary lines WITHOUT the 'need' of a fence to do so...

At one time I had considered adopting a Doberman mix from a local rescue - Until I read their 'application'. Screw that noise...

I went and found a breeder and bought a puppy instead.

Thank you much for keeping an ear out. Yes, I reached out to those orgs and they are at capacity and warned me that lots of shelters are full now and risk of euthanasia is high lately. I posted on Nextdoor but haven’t done FB because I nuked my account there lol. I’ll ask my wife to search for some groups there; good idea.

Our service dog is a French Water Dog (Barbet) from an excellent breeder in Georgia. We got as a pup and trained extensively with a great trainer. He’s been everywhere with us.

I read ya on FB.... only use it for Marketplace or searches for dobe info- like best dobe vet in area...then I go inactive. Time waster and privacy risk.

I note there is a revitalized dobe FB group in San Diego that does meetups. Maybe similar in your area, you could out out the word. Ideally you want to vet the person.

Maybe try area Dobe savvy veterinarians, groomers...breeders...its a stretch but maybe someone knows someone...they can vouch for...looking for an above average rehome.
I've heard same from SD Humane Society- still at capacity...
Keep trying.
PM'd ya on the other lead...gone dead I think

PS: dunno why my mind keeps chewing on this...
(No I cant take another dog, but...you need someone in your area affluent enough to commit to care and dobe training...

Remember Dr Sophie Liu of the Disappearing Doberman Project, and DCM study interview on Doberman Planet youtube? That stirred folks up a bit!

Dr Sophie is doing high end behavioral work in Oakland. Maybe she knows someone looking for a good dog...and who is willing to pay her to assess and help that owner train further. She knows dobes.

For the buyer Beorn is an above average rescue- sweet, biddable, his issues known and workable...its like buying a used Porsche with a fender bender fixed, at a screaming good deal..(alteady..."past the dobeshark puppy stage, whew!")
but a wise buyer would need a pre-purchase inspection by an independent German car shop to be sure. If they are serious enough to pay for Dr Liu, you have your buyer, and background confirm from Dr Liu.

The East Bay Humane Society might be a backup plan, if worst comes to worse, Corey.

Sometimes in life the time or the finances might not be just perfect to be adding a particular pet to the family.

Sometimes that 'used' dog can save you a pile of money (and time) in the long run... :)

Suggesting you get this dog and make it part of your family... :)

Haha...that would be a No!
But thanks for the well meant suggestion.
If I were fabulously wealthy and nothing else to do, yes....
Been there done that enough...now I know better for BW and I to even THINK of visiting the shelter..."just to pet the dogs!"

Or "why not foster just a couple weeks?..."
😉🤣🤡

I heard this commercial the other day that said I only 'needed' one kidney (but currently have 2) and that got me to thinking... :)
