I ride with my Dobermans and have since they were fairly young. They love it and will follow the horses where ever we go. It is a fantasic way to exercise horse, dogs and people all at the same time. ;) Anyone else ride with their dogs ?

Yes, and they love the smells. They think it's a vacation and I can go at their speed. Lol.

My son and his family do it much more than I do. Their dog is a trail dog.:D

lol MLR....... I dont know why she hates dogs so much but she sure does.....if one gets into the pasture she comes racing at it teeth showing. I have seen her bite beau our farm dog....and one time she got right over top of him and did a little dance! lucky for beau he somehow managed to avoid all 4 feet.

horses eat to much, but i did buy a fancy mountain bike to run karma on, got a huge park next to my house (that they are connecting to other parks as well) thats has rowdy mountain bike paths or nice pavement. karma prefers rowdy, lol. Good hour and half ride wears her out for the rest of the nite!

Boris is scared to death of our big Paint, so he'd be 2 counties ahead of me if we tried it. Zeus is a big boy and playful, so any time Boris gets near, Zeus comes barreling at him wanting to play, and I can't say I blame him (Boris) for getting out of the way...

Had my two out yesterday with my older mare. Most of my horses with the exception of the youngsters that are not trained yet or the one I am working on do not mind the dogs coming with us. My dogs are pretty good they know where to be around the horses when we ride... trial and error for them. They did get stepped on a few times when they got to close. My one mare loves to race Jenna... LOL.... Of course my mare wins but I will hold her back so that Jenna can run along side her , then I let her speed up, faster and fast till she is long gone past Jenna. Great exercsie for them. Rudy tends to take his time and trot along... smart dude.

I'm still catching up on reading 'old' posts and found this one! Nice to see there are so many of you that own horses ! :) We have a huge farmers field behind our 10 acres and before or after he planted/harvested I would ride with the last Dobie was had. She loved it and like you, would try and race my one mare. Actually, I think my mare was racing the dog. She likes to be in front! But that was fun and I would like to do it with Buddy but not until we really have our boundaries down pat. (and the recall, PERFECT) Right now, he knows not to go past our lot line into the field. I'm afraid if I took him out there, he might start to venture out there on his own. :nono: For now we just trot around our property and practice him staying with me.

Pictures please of horses and Dobes on the trail together!

Sure but I am the one usually with the camera but a friend took these a couple of years ago.

awesome pictures!! beautiful really!!

Thanks so much.. they really do love the horses and going. If they do not get to come you know it, they make such a ruckus by howling and crying.

I have a green horse I am training right now and I do not take them yet with her, so they miss out. Those days I usually ride a couple of times so they do get to go at least once. ;)

I don't ride horses personally but we do visit and train where there are miniature horses and she's has been around them a lot since she was young and she's been around a few full size horses too. Trinity even tried to "herd" one of the miniatures once. My trainer's two dobes are trained to herd the horses and I could see the light go on in Trinity's head like... THIS IS FUN!! Silly girl! Everyone laughed at her but, being a worrisome mom, I was afraid she might get hurt so I yelled out "Trinity leave it" and she came back to me so I was relieved and proud of her. :D

Letting any dog herd horses is extremely dangerous to the dog. I have seen the aftermath first hand after a horse had had enough of being herded. This dog got stomped, broken ribs, broken leg in 3 places, smashed jaw, smashed out teeth.

I happened to be looking after my friends horses and dogs whilst she was away for the night... I took the dog to the Vet, the roof of the dogs mouth ended up being a metal plate, his leg was held together with rods, pins and screws and he ended up with no top teeth and very little bottom on the one side of his mouth.

This dog and his brother thought it was fun to herd horses, after months of this, one horse had enough and took out his anger on the one dog that was the least of the problem. The dog was so young my friend paid thousands of dollar to have him fixed up.

My advice knowing horses and having been around thm my entire life.... NEVER EVER allow your dogs to " herd " or chase horses, the dog or the horses could end up severely injured.

I'm sorry for what happened to your friend's dog. That is so sad. :(
I was very happy that Trinity returned to me when I called her.

I sure agree with Dobified! My neighbor has horses and a Border Collie. They are natural herders but her horse didn't agree and kicked him in the head. The dog is usually pretty fast but that time, not so much. He's ok, but I think it knocked him silly. I wasn't there, she told me about it later. And her one horse is a wack job that actually goes after other animals!

My dog is not allowed in the corral or close to my horses. I wouldn't want to start that! I love that your dog came right to your side when called, Dobiemom! Wonderful recall! :)

It's summer and I guess I'm bumping this thread back up with a picture I took the other day! ;) Despite the fact that I don't allow Buddy in the corral or pasture with the horses, sometimes I will let one horse at a time graze some area not fenced. They will usually stay close and happily graze alone...let them all out together is asking for trouble! One takes flight and I have all three horses visiting the neighbors! :o This is Cheyenne and out of the three she is the most reliable and trustworthy for leaving out loose. I leave her loose a lot and even mow the grass while she is free roaming the land! She's a good girl! :p Then Buddy came over to see what was soooo yummy that Cheyenne was eating. I decided to try for a photo as long as I had the two together. :)
