Allergies?

Definitely! I think I’ll give him another bath soon with the medicated shampoo I was using. Maybe it will help wash away whatever is on him that is irritating his skin

That doesn't sound like an idea that could hurt anything. At least if he hasn't had hives for a couple - three months, you know you're doing a lot right. It's probably not his food/other lifestyle items you would have to guess at.

Some things we do.
Never use any dryer sheets on dog bedding, clothing or dog towels.
Improving Gut health and all about Gut Health I posted yesterday.

Look up 4-legger shampoos for pets to carpet cleaners. All Organic with no synthetic chemicals. Lots of great information on their site.

I haven’t given him another bath yet since I’ve been so busy, but yesterday morning most of the hives were gone and today they look to be completely cleared up! I’m so happy because I was worried they would stick around for awhile like last time. Hopefully now that I won’t be using that shampoo we won’t have anymore issues 🤞🏻

Good and bad news. His hives are nearly gone, probably 80% better than the day we went to the vet!

I’m not sure if it could be due to the steroids, or just random, but I suspect he has a uti now. :(
For the past week or so Remy has been getting these hives/bumps primarily along his back. This is not the best picture so hopefully you can see them well enough! The first two days I noticed them I gave him some Benadryl, but that did not seem to help at all. He hasn’t seemed itchy until today. We were outside and he had to sit multiple times to itch which is totally unusual for him.

Some of the bumps you can clearly feel that it is slightly raised, but others are more of a visual bump than one you can feel if that makes sense.

They also seem to be more prominent some days than others. I gave him a bath yesterday and at first it seemed like they were gone. Shortly after I noticed them reappearing and today he has more than ever before.

I am going to call the vet and see if he can have allergy testing done since I’m not sure what is causing it. Is there anything else I should have them do?

He has been eating the same food for about 4 months, his treats are all limited or single ingredient (freeze dried or dehydrated), and I haven’t introduced him to any new ones recently. He has been walking in the long grass a little more than usual, but that has never bothered him before. View attachment 136229
Hi I know this is an older post but I was wondering if you ever found out what was causing this?? My 7 month old male went to the vet yesterday with hive like bumps. They suggested Claritin and a certain shampoo that I have ordered. TIA for any advise!!

I’ve speculated a lot on the cause and I’m not 100% sure still. Two times he has had more severe looking hives, the first time it happened a year ago, then again in June. Although they look like hives they were never really responsive to any type of treatment. He’s had them more mild looking a few times. I was just talking to a women about this at a dog show since she’s been involved with Dobermans since the 80’s. She said the way I bathe him is probably distributing the hair follicle and making the hair raised/bumped. I’m not sure if she’s right but honestly it makes sense to me! He never feels bumpy, just looks it.

Thank you for you reply! So it just went away on its own? We feed PPP and just switched from chicken to salmon. Hoping it’s that but worried it’s environmental. Gave Claritin last night and don’t see much if any improvement😕

Yes, eventually it just cleared up!

I hope the meds work for you and he clears up soon!

She said it’s likely from putting the shampoo directly onto him, and to try putting it on a sponge and bathing him that way. I’ve heard someone say that before too, so I’m hoping she’s right lol.
Interesting. FWIW, I've always premixed the shampoo in a bucket and poured half of it over Kaiser, then use zoom groom in the same direction as the hair, then pour the remaining bucket over him. The loosened dirt comes out, then I rinse extra. I have seen people rub a dog's coat in the opposite direction - whether wet or dry - and it always makes me cringe, can't imagine it feels good to the dog either. I can see that it would irritate the hair follicles.
