5K Walk

Our little kennel club in town got Fit Club added to our AKC status and we did a trial run for what we hope will be a community offering next year. A 5K walk with your dog. So we set it up just as if it were put on for public participation with water stations, arrow signs, map and all that, but just club members doing the walk. It is always optional to run, but we all walked. Asha took off on her steady trot and I walked long-strides to keep up. If I jogged she would just go faster, so that wan't an option for me. The weather was perfect. We did the 3,1 miles in exactly one hour, which is faster than I ever do on hikes, but it was mostly flat and all paved. Anyway, a good time was had by all. We did arrive first, but it wasn't a race, we just did our thing. LOL, my walking step length trying to avoid jogging...:rofl::rofl:

I think everyone that was there yesterday agreed it's way easier to do than any other things we've tried to do for the community. Somewhere in the bylaws a community activity is required to be an AKC club. I imagine we could spruce it up a bit. The one who suggested it does people running events herself, so she knows the most on how it should look, and did say we could offer a walk group and a jogging/run group, but the main feature is to revolve around doing it with your dog.

Looks like fun!
Are you doing the AKC Turkey Trot too? My friend is going to do it just for fun, even though it costs to enter but she's working on her Fit Dog gold level and they said the turkey trot doesn't count toward fit dog. She said that's okay since she already has her walking time in so she just needs to do two more Fast Cat trials.

I haven't looked into Fit Dog, but for self reporting I could probably do it.
They do the walk part on an honor system and you have to break your miles up into a time frame. You also have to run and qualify in something else in the Fit Dog program, like Fast Cat.
The Turkey Trot is also on the honor system.
