4 month old puppy too skinny

He looks like a typical young male puppy. They all go through a growth spurt at this age where they look like adults, but because they are so young, they just look lean and lanky. My Euro male seemed to fill up around 3 years of age, so it can take a while! His parents are good looking European Dobermans, so I can see why you may think he looks too skinny by comparison, but he will follow his genetics, so be patient.

I agree with Rits that the homemade diet is a bit of a concern because one really needs to know what they are putting together to make sure the diet is balanced. Chicken and eggs are great, but what about the bones and organs? Adding vegetables is fine for adults, but I wonder if that means he is missing other vital nutrients for puppy growth that he might otherwise get from a good kibble? You said reputable breeders have been feeding this diet too? Ask them to double-check your recipe to be sure it's appropriate for a puppy. I also agree about adding a 3rd meal - it can't hurt!

I wanted an euro doberman and the breeder also said that he is European and his parents also looks euro to me too
but seeing my hunter's physique and face I thought he might be an American and that too of not good genetics
I don't know why I felt that even though his parents looks so good.
but just as read your reply that he will follow his genetics, maybe late but he will, it gave me a bit of hope so thank you for that really.
and I give him 3 meals but I am gonna do something about his diet now that I have read all your responses and I guess something is really wrong with his diet so I'll fix it.

Here is Kaiser at 6 months old. He's wearing a jacket, but I remember thinking he looked like a starving Greyhound But it was just a growth spurt. He looks like he is all legs here and his back was a bit more curvy like a horse. Sometimes I still think he has a lot in common with horses - tons of pics here: Kabin Adventure!



Nowadays, he looks amazing in every picture He's almost 5 years old in this one.

Hi guys,

I'm from Germany and got a 4-month-old European doberman puppy. He's currently at 13.5 kg (30 lbs) and I think he's a bit too skinny - he should be at ~18 kg (40 lbs).
(Weight chart: Gewicht von Rin, Dobermann, Männlich)

I'm feeding him 3x per day Orijen puppy large breed food (390g / day) - that's already more that recommended.

Do you have some tips for me, how he'll gain some more weight?
What was the weight of your european doberman puppy at 4 months?

I have/ had (it’s ongoing) the same problem! My 5mo/ old won’t put on weight since he’s been months. Since you’re in Germany I can maybe help a little bit. First off I would not feed orijen…it’s a great awsome food. But In my experience not the best for dobies…so is wolfsblut..they’re both top of the top but very rarely have I seen a Dobie do good on them…a few suggestions I have is (my all time favorite) eukanuba Welpe (large ) Lamm und Reis later on as adult I switch to the performance one. Outside of that pets deli, mera and barfen of course. I know that compared to orijen and wolfsblut most of these sound “trash” but overall they’ve done best on them…I know some swear by “platinum” and if you’re okay with all wet food Animo-irg was (kp ehrlich wie das heisst genau gibts im fessnapf und ist einer wenn nicht das beste nassfutter) but having been in Germany and knowing many dobies and having had many going “down” a grade is not the worst…they are known to have intestinal problems more than other breeds so sometimes the “best ingredients food” isn’t the best for the dog…if you want that you’re going to have to raw feed (barfen) where you can control what of what and how much.
Soo my suggestion first off would be the eukanuba Lamm und Reis. It’s easy on stomach and I have not had a Dobie not like it. 2. I would check for worms! If there’s no worms try feeding more and more and see if he’s putting in weight. If still nothing or it’s stagnant add “rinderfettpulver” but make sure to add probiotics (bactisel is amazing also just as additive. All my dogs get it non stop) now, the rinderfett and adding cooked chicken helped mine put on weight! As well as a “darm Kur” our problem was his darm was attacked and not properly working so that in combination of proper food and adding extra “fat” helped him recover and is slowly gaining a normal weight.
The darm Kur i suggest is bei “das gesunde Tier” they have all kinds so I’m sure you’ll find the right one.
