We recently bought a “ pure bred Doberman “ about a month ago . He was around 18 lbs when we got him and around 13 inches , over the last month he has grown 10 inches and gained 27 lbs. we just got a DNA test to see if he’s mixed with Dane or some other large breed . He’s beautiful and does look pure bred however we are just confused how he is so large . We make sure he gets lots of exercise and he is not overweight by any means and he still has some visible ribs. If he is a pure dobbie we assume he just may the pride of the litter as his dad was 165 lbs. once again he is just extremely young and far exceeded and normal Doberman size standards for even 4 months old even though he’s 13 weeks Old and not a single on of his baby teeth have fallen out and in fact not all of them have even come in yet .

There is a thread where you can peruse puppy weights as they grow so you can see how yours is exceeding the norm.

Doberman puppy owners - track your weight gain here

To note:
He does look like a purebred, although it would be nice to see a side view photo of him standing. No Doberman should weigh 165 pounds. If indeed his sire did, then your puppy is obviously going to be oversized also and the "hyper-type" Dobermans often have more health issues than average, so be prepared for that. The Doberman has enough health problems without being the size of Great Danes! Best of luck with him. I suggest keeping him as slim as possible while he grows to help prevent his joints from damage from carrying so much weight before the bone is developed.

The weird thing is, that

So if he's 13 weeks now then he was 9 weeks when he weighed 18 lbs. This is not huge. My very average girl was 20 lbs at 10 weeks when I picked her up if I remember correctly.

Are you measuring height at the withers (the highest point of the back just before the neck on top of the shoulder blades)?

It’s from ground to heights point on the back , we were also confused at the rapid rate of growth hence our posting here . He’s 26 inches at his head .

Thank you for confirming that. Could you post a photo of him standing in good light so we can see if he's overweight or just really big? Doesn't need to be a fancy picture, just something like this:

Be interested in a dna but even that is problematic...depending on who you read, Mr Dobermann bred 5 dogs for his german dogs...

I understand going big is a thing...Doberdanes, etc.

Have fun, looks like a sweetheart!

It’s hard to get him to sit still in all honesty whenever he’s out he’s running around and jumping all over things . I’ve had many dogs in my life , Danes , mastiffs etc but he by far has more energy then we have ever experienced in a dog . I take him on 3 walks a days and he has lots of play time with our other dog but is always ready to go

He doesn't look overweight, he just looks big. Consider feeding an "All Life Stages" food rather than Puppy food to slow his growth rate. He will still get to be the same size as his genetics make him, but your goal should be to slow down the speed of him getting there. Keep him slim all his life and intact until at least 18 - 24 months old, preferably longer. He looks a bit weak in the hocks, but it may just be how he's standing. Hormones play a huge part in bone development and neutering prevents that. Early spay and neuter has been found to increase knee and hip problems later. His energy sounds like a typical Doberman puppy.

He’s not neutered but unfortunately last night we did find a worm in his poop , we do have a vet appointment in an hour or so . That could be why he looks weak muscularly , we just hope our baby is ok

A 165lbs dobermann? I've never seen anything like that, the most I've seen is 130lbs, and that was a EXTREME hypertype. Mine's 95-100lbs and even I think that's a bit too much, I can already see why people want lighter dobermans.
He looks perfectly fine to me tho! He'll be a big boy, but I'm 99% sure he won't make it to 165lbs, and I sure hope he doesn't, for his own well being.
Be careful of hypertype breeders please, they are the ones ruining the breed.
Such a cute boy tho!!!

Wow... he's a big boy. Are you certain he's only 13 wks (registration paper would have a DOB)?

Just for reference, what size is that crate he's standing next to?

That's definitely a Doberman trait LOL, they are always ready to go! It will likely be that way until he is 3 or 4 years old when he might start to calm down. If this is your first time with a Doberman dog, boy are you in for a ride! 😆 I always say, first time Dobering is no joke! Mine is 7.5 years old and he's still got crazy puppy energy.

He looks pure bred to me too, but it will be interesting to see what the DNA test says. Also, I think it's worth it to get pet insurance with this breed in general, but even more so if his dad really was 165 lbs.
