I agree with all the advice given. Your schedule is challenging even for someone with a lazy dog because even a lazy dog would need a routine for going potty. A high energy Doberman is just a lot of dog to handle. This breed is not easy for a first time owner and they require a lot of commitment. No one is exaggerating when they say that. Between me and my hb, it has been a ton of work to build the wonderful companion we have today. It took time and training for US, the people, to learn how to work with the animal.
The chewing is a boredom activity. It’s not that no one knows how to stop it, it’s just time consuming. Do you have the time to mentally and physically drain the dog of their energy so they don’t create their own entertainment? Only you know whether you can spare YOUR time and YOUR energy to do this.
Re the potty issues, you definitely have to go outside with her and say the command. My boy is almost 3 years old and sometimes he will just walk around or eat grass when he’s outside, but if I give him the potty command, he’ll suddenly pee a river! They just need to be told and watched while doing it. It’s annoying, I know, but they are called Velcro dogs for a reason and it’s way easier to work WITH your Dobe than to try and work against them.
I would love to hear a success story come out of this, so if you’re up to the task, you and your Dobe could be happier together with more time put into the relationship, but please reread this thread and give your situation an honest assessment.
It’s very saddening that nobody seems to know how to get her to just stop chewing the dog door.
