Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Didn't know whether to post this in this critters thread or video of the day?

Lady in neighborhood feeds (12) feral cats daily, however the local buzzards (turkey vultures) have caught on and patiently await the mealtimes as well. They don't fight with cats, just wait until the felines have gotten their fill, then move in. Normally it's just 3 or 4 birds, but this day was different!

That's creepy! I sure wouldn't want a bunch of buzzards sitting on my roof! I did hear you say they are eating the cat food. Good thing they are not eating the cat! :flushed:

I caught a turkey vulture snacking on a cat spine and skull freshly left behind...coyote most likely....

But yeah, feral cats, dont get between them and crazy cat ladies...🤣
The fact is feral cats are biggest predators of native endangered birds, around here...big controversy.
 
Last night feeding the horses I went in the tack room to fill the grain buckets. And found this little guy! 🐀 LOL How did you get in there? And now you can't get out! Haha. Such a little one. Don't worry I took him over to the high grass on the neighbor's property and let him go. Annie was very curious and I know she would have gotten him so I had to be sure to release him behind her back. 😄

Last weekend when my daughter was in town, we were sitting on the back deck when this little guy hit the window! He laid there for a while and I was worried that he was laying in the Sun. I was going to gently pick him up and put him in the shade when he suddenly stood up. So then we stood next to him to give him shade from our shadow. After a while he was looking quite perky. We were excited when he finally flew off!

One recently hit our window, same bird! Thanks for the identification....he didn't make it, and I cried because his mate was on the deck also....she came for days it seemed, looking for him :(
 
We have this giant Ponderosa tree that died. The ravens and the vultures take turns using it as a roost.

Vultures for the most part rarely kill anything, they just clean up the dead things. There were 10 I counted in that closer photo, J & I were looking at them and saying "Not yet! Not yet!" LOL.

Not really a critter or wildlife, but I was playing on my phone this afternoon and this guy came to visit. He flew away after a few minutes but I have no idea what it was.

Dang, is anyone else getting these Tiger Mosquito's?

They are especially obnoxious because they are tiny, fast, and bite alllllllll day. They don't wait for evening like our regular mosquito's. So when the patio finally has shade, we'll pop the fan on and sit out there but we've only been lasting like 15 minutes because you end up with half a dozen new mosquito bites without seeing a single thing. We have a little bucket that we create to entice mosquito's to lay their eggs in and then drop a mosquito dunk in it which kills the larvae and have had great success in past summers but these things are either unimpressed with our man-made bog or there are just so many of them, there is no hope of relief.

I guess they're not 'new' to the area but in my 10 years of living here, this is the first I've heard about them. They are BAAAAD this summer.

Note: did a bit of reading just now; they will lay eggs in literally anything. Illinois Department of Public Health's website says remove any "junk" from your yard that could capture water.

The neighbor we share our backyard fence line with has SO MUCH STUFF piled up in his yard. I'm sure any one of his several tarps, minimally, has enough standing water to keep these guys producing en mass. grooooooooan

Holy cow! Interesting looking, but deadly huh? No, I have not seen them here and I don't want to! :bag: Keep it up there by you! LOL I detest mosquitoes and will come in the house at the first sight of one. I'm a morning person anyway and even though some can be out in the shade I usually can avoid any mosquitoes that way. My husband will be out after dark watering and I always tell him, how do you do that? I can't even stand the thought that there is a mosquito near me let alone feeling one land on me! Or hearing them buzzing your ear ! :pullhair:He doesn't seem to be as bothered by them as I am. I know some people attract them more than others. And then he does sometimes spray himself when he knows he's going to be out after dark. I don't even like to sit on the back deck after Dark because of that. Sometimes I'll sit out there for a while and at the first sight or the first bite, I am out of here!:sonic:

I'm going to show your picture to my husband and see if he has noticed any of these horrible creatures.😵‍💫
