Introducing Clancy

Hope you enjoy hearing about these early days with Clancy. Today he learned about a bed near the campfire. He's relaxed a lot.IMG_20260616_141156.webp
And tonightIMG_20260616_194102.webp
He looks immature to me and I wonder if the rescue group guessed correctly. Wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't a year old yet.
He has learned to sit automatically when food is offered and working on the wait command. He also learned about me cutting firewood and wasn't worried by the saw. We're doing a lot of walks in loops through the bush around camp so he is oriented and knows where home is and working on the loose leash walk with check ins and recalls. He still stalls sometimes but I have a leather collar on him and he can't do the Houdini out of it.
Clancy is a clever little boy and very compliant but I'm not rushing formal training for a while. I think a lot will happen naturally.
Oh, and he had a small piece of my chicken Kiev and you could see the look of astonishment in his eyes at that taste. He looked like a piece of heaven had landed in his mouth and he wanted MORE!
I've never had a rescue dog before and didn't know how wonderful it is to see them experience things for the first time!

There does always seem to be a sort of... appreciation... a rescue dog has that a puppy home right from a breeder doesn't. My last boy wasn't even mistreated, he was just an afterthought with his first family. I brought him home and he was the center of my universe and WOW was that a big change for him that he seemed to relish in.

Love hearing all about his "firsts!"

It's VERY rewarding isn't it? I have a little girl here now named Sheila. She was found in the woods and not far away from the highway a busted crate was found. It was assumed that someone just pitched her in her crate while driving down the highway. She's been at the rescue for almost a year and it's been decided she is ready for a home. I brought her home for a trial and to see how she does in a home environment. So far it's going really well. But to see her live her best dog life, running like the wind, smelling new things and just rolling in the grass has kept me in happy tears this week. She has discovered she LOVES people beds.

❤️❤️❤️ these stories @jazzies mum
And how you think about "learning from the dog in front of you" to apply your life experience to teaching them how to "walkabout".

I had a rescue who we were warned was a wanderer, and proven escape artist.

After some thought I realized it was easier to train the dog than family to keep doors and gates closed, so I came uo with a similar expanding circularpattern on walks, getting sniffies marking territory out and back...

Hoping someday he'd recognize and find his way home.

One day...
Well that's another story but it worked.

Thanks for sharing I'm living vicariously on your bush stories, like I learn from the others here in all the ways we have co-evolved as separate species.

All my dogs mostly rescues come alive from a bad start by walking in nature. As do I.

It sounds like he's already settling in nicely and realizing you are his safe person he can trust.

Poor baby!

I had forgotten that you were involved with a rescue group. I admire you for that and I'm glad there are wonderful moments as it must be heartbreaking a lot of the time. And it's a big YES from Clancy too on the people bed!

Some fun out on the long lineIMG_6384.webpIMG_6383.webpIMG_6385.webpThings Clancy now knows.

1:- How to make eye contact when asking for something
2:- Sitting automatically when waiting for leash and when asking for something
3:- Meaty bones are good
4:- A bed in front of the fire is good
5:- A blanket on at night is good!!!

Aww he looks really relaxed and confident already. It looks like he might have some sort of hound mixed in there from that top line.

Was going to say

He’s looking to you for direction. And

That last pic looks all nose/prey drive.
The nose might be a skill to hone.

He seems to have little or no prey drive
Isn't he only about a year old? Could be some of his drives just haven't kicked in yet or he hasn't had an opportunity to develop them. That nose to ground looks like something may be starting to stir.
His silhouette in that 3rd pic reminds of some breed that just won't come to mind. It's right on the tip of my tongue but I just can't think of it. Can someone help?
