Early am vomiting

Pepper within the last 3 weeks one time a week has woken at 4:30 am and vomits. This is about 12 hours after she ate her dinner. The vomit is mushy kibble. She did have a little peanut butter yesterday, like a teaspoon amount. Her snacks daily are some fruit and veggies whatever I am cutting up and it’s not a lot she gets either. I can’t figure out why this is happening and there aren’t any issues.

12 hours with soft digested kibble coming up is so odd shouldn’t it be digested?

I am not sure if this coincides with being off leash either although she is a million times better with eating random things.

I don’t think it warrants a vet call as she’s fine in other areas. Curious if anyone else has had this happen or has any ideas as to why.

If it's just a little bit of kibble (not half her supper) and randomly, not daily, I don't think I'd worry. But yes, generally kibble is digested and out of the stomach in several hours. Asha does this occasionally, but not often. And yes, I've noticed it sometimes coincides with off leash hikes. She doesn't pick up much, ignores deer & rabbit poop, but will always try to eat turkey splats. :green:

It’s like a handful of mush, so not all her food, just the kibble.

Ok helpful to know Asha does this too.

It’s random and I can’t pinpoint what may cause it, but off leash wood hikes maybe…

Thank you @Ravenbird

I had some vomiting from Katyusha for a spell. It was during a time that I tried one of those no drip water bowls. Turns out she would get at the toilet if I left the lid up and drink it all and then it would cause problems later. I went back to the normal water bowls and everything returned to normal. I probably wouldn't take her in from what you are describing here, I would watch for causes, correlations, and whether or not it becomes better or worse.

I don't think it's unusual for them to get hunger pukes shortly before meal time
Asha did that as an adolescent, but I'd never heard of it, until someone on this forum mentioned it. From evening feeding to morning breakfast was a few hours longer to go without eating so I started feeding her 12 hours apart, so that was the max she'd go without food.

Clarke used to throw up 8 hours after evening meal sometimes...it was exactly that...undigested kibble, but just a handful of mush. Dr. Dodds had an article that said this is acid reflux, and you can give 2 Tablespoons of unsweetened applesauce just before bed, then a 10mg of Pepsid in the am before breakfast. It worked! I didn't do it daily; but a few times a week for him, and it ended cycle.

Wonderful information, thank you!

I didn't know that! Our dogs get a tiny bit of unsweetened applesauce a little before bed but we don't have any Pepcid in the house. They haven't vomited for a long time (KOW) but it's good to know.

I wanted to share that I have been giving Pepper 2 tablespoons of applesauce before bed for a week. Thank God no vomiting. Thank you for sharing this helpful information!

This really intrigued me so I looked it up:
Applesauce reduces acid reflux because it is a low-fat, low-acid, and easily digestible food rich in fiber. It aids in reducing heartburn by acting as a gentle, soothing food that helps neutralize stomach acid and provides magnesium and calcium to balance the stomach's pH.

Hmmppttt, who would have figured.

For years, I took Pepcid or Omeprazole for acid reflux. It would work here and there- still had bouts of bad reflux but it definitely decreased it. I read a study (don’t have it now) that if you took 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, mixed in liquid, in the morning, it would reduce if not eliminate GERD.

I drink probably a bottle of water every morning at the gym so I just mixed it in the water. Not lying here y’all…I no longer have GERD, upset stomach, heartburn, etc…I did the baking soda in water for about 4months and then stopped.

Now, if I get stupid and drink 8 beers, eat boiled crawfish and have spaghetti next day, then I’m asking for trouble but otherwise than that I have been good to go for a while now. I told my brother the same for his severe GERD, he mixed the baking soda in his coffee and yup…his GERD is gone. Makes sense, it is an alkaline acting on an acid.

Wonder if the baking soda would help out Dobermans rather than giving anti acid meds- kinda think it would have the same effect.

It’s so far been a huge help. She burps less and doesn’t seem like she feels unwell. Sometimes I could tell by looking at her that her belly was upset, those weeks she’d have episodes at night. Her face and mannerisms, I know sounds crazy , but I could see she felt poorly.

I’m praying this keeps her on the right track.

That is incredibly helpful about humans with GERD. I also take Pepcid daily and I don’t like to, but I have awful reflux. I know coffee is one of my issues and I just can’t give up coffee. I have tried and then I fall off the wagon after a few months in 😫😵‍💫 I like that your brother mixes his in his coffee too lol. I will toss mine in water like you do.

When do you notice it started to work?

I am going to do as you listed above and thank you @Ddski5!!!

It was within the first couple of days tbh. Now if you are dealing with a tummy/esophagus that is raw, then you have to give it time to regrow the protective lining.

I am gonna try the applesauce with Freyja. I notice after about an hour after her dinner she starts licking her lips and swallowing a lot. I think this is her excessive salivating- possibly from reflux.

What type/brand of applesauce do you use?

The baking soda I use comes with a very small spoon in it, that’s what I use in my water.
