Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Very close same genus but different species, this is an orb weaver that is actually beneficial*.
Sometimes confused with brown recluse, too.

Good spider to have around compared to a less common and similar brown recluse or the ever unpopular and populous here black widow.

*ever seen a king snake and wonder if its the more lethal coral snake? Whats that saying, like a memory aid?

like the triangulate cobweb spider that eats bad bugs, and bad spiders
the king snake actually eats bad snakes, inc rattlers.

I have to admit I find spiders slightly anxiety producing especially walking dog at night and fotgetting headlight...walk right into a six foot across web across the walkway or trail...
Wrapped around your head...
then "doing the crazy spider dance"

Brown recluse (bad bite) is not to be confused with brown widow (not so bad but avoid)
which have expanded in so cal:

And if you are interested in spotting spiders especially at night in the desert...
Try this: bring a strong flashlight and look for eye-shine, like you might scouting deer, coyote, cats...
...glitter like tiny jewels brilliant stars in sky of bright blue/purple/ruby red, except in the cactus and plant leaf litter on ground.

Our 3 y/o rescue Doberman, Lola, has a very high prey drive. She is fascinated by lizards and squirrels and usually stalks them before any barking occurs, unlike our male, Neo. Video below shows first appearance of Larry the Lizard this year, only his second year in our yard. We normally get chameleons but this is first Texas Spiny Lizard that appeared last summer in our yard. I've read they hibernate during cold months of winter.

(FYI- I tether, with short retractable, either Dobe at garage when I'm doing yardwork in front of house.)

I took this of a big tom the other day but this is the first we've had internet so I could upload it.
At first I didn't think it was Harold, our resident turkey from last year but when he started sassing me, I think it might be him.

I agree! Walking through a spider web is no fun! Riding horses in the State Park, I always hated to be the first one. Let the first Rider go through them all! LOL If I'm first, I have my trusty horse hair fly-swish!! Waving that thing in front of me like mad! 🤣

Probably one of our mild winters here, it's a toss of a coin whether we'll get a decent winter. When we first moved here, we would get some -5's, and days that would never go over 25 degrees. Haven't had that happen in a LONG time. We've also had a winter with just rain, no snow, and one where it didn't even rain all winter. In 2022 we had a good winter, plenty of snow.

Just some of the birds here. There's so many more. My favorite is a little Bluebird of happiness! :D

Then I saw this. 😟 Squirrel? That's what Google said. I've never seen them on the ground before. And exposed like that. They're dead, of course.
