Random Pet Photo of the Day - 2026

haha, I see you're an International Harvester girl!

My grandfather owned red tractors and red tractors, only 😂 it weirdly gets recognized more in IL than when I lived in PA, likely because the IH headquarters was in Chicago before it became Navistar and moved to Lisle, IL. I have been stopped multiple times and had people ask to take a selfie with my tattoo hahahaha their face next to my shoulder

I didn't want to steal any more thunder from Clancy's thread so here's Shelia.
A bit timid at first but she's coming out of her shell. She's loving her life right now. :)
@jazzies mum she and Clancy have matching paws.

She's looking happy and relaxed. What does Riley think of her? I imagine his play style might be a bit daunting to start with.

Riley is pretty good with her. He's used to me bring dogs home for trials to see how they do in a home environment. When I do bring a dog home they are introduced slowly mostly for the sake of the new dog because Riley is a LOT. He is a very strong dog and doesn't always realize just how strong he is.
It's not just because of Riley that I take it slow. Shelia's life has been pretty much the shelter. Coming into a home and experiencing so many new things can be overwhelming. The mental stimulation can be exhausting so the dog isn't always up for meeting a new dog.. Shelia has done well adjusting so she went on our walk yesterday. She did fantastic. I can't wait to see her settled into her forever home. She's gonna make a great partner in an active household. She's a young dog with lots of love to give. I have my fingers crossed she gets a family that is adventurous and takes her along for the ride.

I was wondering too. Rhodies are such cool dogs IMHO. But oddly gentle in my experience, limited as it was, for how big they are with that typically direct look checking you out.
@GennyB @jazzies mum and others with rescue experience, a question, dog nerdy, but hey why not:
I remember when the buzzword was "guest dog for two weeks".
Now its 3-3-3, 3 months before they really settle in.
How has that compared to your experience in toto, a generalization with understanding that every dog is an individual?

I have very little experience but I agree! Riley is a GREAT dog as you withdraw from a dobie. He has a lot of similar traits without the neurotic tendencies or health issues. IMHO, he's smart, protective and beautiful.

First I guess I should explain that the place I volunteer at is one of the best I have ever seen. They are a no kill shelter that has an amazing fund raising staff and a community behind them that donates both time and supplies. Therefore they have the wherewithal to keep and "fix" a dog before it goes to a forever home. We get dogs and cats from all kinds of situations therefore some need some work brfore they go to a home. The shelter teamed up with purina farms and the trainers of the incredible dog team. They have the skills to fix a lot of behavioral issues so they have an outstanding success rate of matching a dog to a person. So often shelters don't have the space or funds to do that so they have to keep the dogs moving out the door. So often that can be a tragedy.
So now that I laid the groundwork, I'll say in this case (meaning the case of this shelter) when a dog is ready to be adopted it's a process. Lots of work has been done already so by the time a dog goes to a staff member or voluteers home for a trial 2 weeks is sufficient to get an idea if the dog is ready to be adopted or needs more work. If they are ready for adoption the staff works closly with that family to make the process as easy as possible for everyone, especially the dog.
I guess I would say this shelter doesn't put timelines on the process. They work with the dog untill.
