Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

That's cool! You should put your hand or something there so we can tell how large, or rather how small, that is! I've often wondered if I have passed a hummingbirds nest and didn't even see it!
Its about the size of a measuring cup- you could fit the whole nest in it.

I spotted her building it, while walking Bonnie on a path 2' away, stopped and stood real still while she flew up and hovered 12" from my forehead.

For now I'm avoiding walking Bonnie past her until the babies have flown the coop, to avoid her abandoning it, or worse another bird or animal picking up on location.

Its a bit vulnerable as its waist height.
According to Merlin, its an "Anna's Hummingbird"

Well, I've never seen this happen before. I guess a hawk landed on the wrong bit of our power pole. I'll take this photo to the power company tomorrow and ask if they need to remove it or if it means something is exposed that shouldn't be. I definitely don't need any sparks flying - we are in extreme drought and fire danger is real 😬 Any of you have power pole knowledge why this would happen?

I'm guessing it landed in the wrong spot and touched two things together that it shouldn't have. We've had quite a few squirrels do it and that explosion is loud and knocked our power out every time. The power company finally put one of those squirrel guards on the pole since it was happening too much. Of course that wouldn't help with a bird.

I was mowing my pasture when I came upon my first snake of the year! Actually. two of them. The first one was halfway out from underneath the back of my horses run-in. I would have run over him with the lawn mower if I didn't stop. He just stood there and looked at me without moving. I'm like, you stupid fool! You better move! By the time I grabbed my camera he was going back in.

I went around and looked on the other side, inside the run-in where the horses stand and he was nowhere to be found. So he is underground. I've spotted them here before in past years. Must be a good spot for them.

Anyway by the time he went back in and I was going to continue my mowing, here comes another one on the other side of me heading toward the run-in and going in the same spot where that guy went. I wish I could have got a clear picture but I saw him too late. He was a good 4 ft long! Long and fat! LOL They were both Biggins! I had my eyes peeled as I mowed the rest making sure there was nobody else that I was going to mow over.

The best pictures I could get.

This afternoon I saw an orange looking bird in the tree that was too small to be an oriole.

Using the zoom lens I realized it was an orange half that I tossed on the ground yesterday and a bird must have carried it up there. LOL

No pictures but in the last couple of days:

A blue jay eating (well, trying to make off with so it could eat) a baby robin! Robins were in quite a tizzy about it

A fox with a rabbit in its mouth

An indigo bunting!

Rubie almost nabbed a baby bunny from a parkway nest on our walk but managed to get just a mouthful of grass

Wow I didn't know that eat baby birds! That would be cannibalism in our world. 😯

And I spoke too soon about not seeing bunny nests. We were gardening all day today and a few times Annie was out with us. One time I looked up to see where she was and she was looking at the ground at something. I was afraid that it might be a snake and that she may be naive enough about seeing her first one. So I started walking over to her when I saw her flip something in the air. When I got to her I saw that it was a baby bunny! I couldn't tell if it was injured or not but it was still alive. I looked around and found the nest and put it back, hoping for the best. Trying to keep her away from that area was difficult and next thing I knew she's looking at something again. This time it was a dead baby rabbit. I don't know if she got it or what. But I felt bad and put her in the house. Trying to keep her away from that area is going to be difficult. 😕

A Great Blue Heron we spotted on a tree floating down the river. He was sunning himself lol

Great shot catching that bird "rafting"!

PS: I betcha money thats a cormorant or similar diving bird, based on shorter legs and looks like webbed feet. They do that around here in SoCal to dry off their oily wings.

Here's a great blue, from Merlin Bird ID app, thats really fun to use, on Iphone or Android.
