US Breeders with export experience?

DKryptos

New Member
Hi all,

I am looking for good reputable breeders in the US that have experience in exporting a dobie to the EU, namely Belgium.
It is a dream to adopt a dobie again after many years without one and the US is the best option since they allow ear cropping and tail docking and don't have to do the RNATT blood test. I know Serbia is a known place not so far from Belgium but sadly they are required by law to do that test which will only allow for the dobie to come after it's 7 months old. The US isn't required to do this so I think it is my best option then. I do want to know if people here from europe also have some experience here importing from the US, if so, how did it go? Is it doable for the dobie? What should I look out for or be prepared for?

I know of one kennel so far, Imperium Dobermann and already sended an email to them. I am however also looking at local dobie rescue places, if the chance presents itself to save one then that might be a good bet to give the dobie being rescued a chance for a warm place with lots of love. But at the moment I want to talk with some breeders get a feeling about them and see where it leads me so welcome for any tips and help!

Thanks in advance!

This is a good site to look up pedigrees, and some info on cause of death - not sure how reliable some of these deaths are; but many people do list 'confirmed DCM' which is helpful. I looked up Imperium, and this is the male she shows on her website:
Best of luck to you!

Do you know what kind of Doberman you are looking for?
North American?
European?

With your previous experience of Dobermans…you are aware that different breeders can produce a more higher drive go go go Doberman vs one that’s more suitable for companion house life. So much better to center your breeder pick around which kind of Doberman you want.

Good luck and keep us updated. It will be very interesting to see this all play out.

I'm not sure if you can export them out of the US anymore after Covid. It might be a possibility for you to fly here and bring the pup back on the plane with you but I have no idea what the rules are anymore.

I'm almost sure none of the rescues will send them out of the country and with some you have to live within so many miles of them. There was a member here from the UK who found a cropped/docked Doberman right in her country but I'm not sure how often you'd see that.

Have you confirmed the import requirements on the Belgium side?
After that its a matter of arranging transport and documentation to meet EU/Belium rules, correct?

DPCA is the AKC breed club for Dobermans in the US and maintains both a breeder referral page and a Doberman Rescue referral page.

My guess is one of those on the East Coast Is likeliest to have come across the answer you seek.

Just brainstorming here- the UK has a breed club for Dobermans and might be another place to ask, as I'd expect more intermixing and exporting ti the EU.

I thought I read that some regions in the UK still allow crop and dock, but I could be wrong.

As far as I know, none of the UK is allowed to crop and dock and hasn't been able too for a long time.
This article came in with the "Dobermans in the news" email and just the title makes me sick.

I don't know what the exact rules are but I know of working puppies (Landgraf) have been born here and sent to Europe, can't recall which country. But yes, within the last year or two for sure. Because of working/show ring rules she does not crop/dock or remove dewclaws, since they can't title many places over there any more if they are cropped and/or docked. So note to @DKryptos - the best breeders in the U.S. that want their puppies to work or show and prove themselves (thus making sure their breeding is working according to their plans), probably will not be interested in exporting pets. It's a risk and they're counting on the new owners to take their puppies to goals world wide.

One of the rescue places near me regular ships dogs to Canada when they become over crowded...

Surprised me but I guess I can believe it.

Thanks, yeah that is their dog they brought along from when they moved to the US, love the breed name. I contacted that breeder but yeah, like I mentioned, being in Serbia and the obligated blood work for RNATT which won't allow the pup to travel to Belgium until its 7 months old (asked some goverment branch that is into these laws and such and they confirmed it. Very useful site I am gonna scroll through it, appreciate it!

Well yeah my experience was as a young teenager to early 20s, my dobie then came from a random couple I came through and saw their doberman and fell in love and they had a litter so they gave me a pup. They weren't any breeders so it was just a dobie without any papers I had to fix everything (I was young and didn't know better) done the cropping and docking myself (with a vet ofc haha) took it to dogschool, had the pup also way too early iso the 12 to 15 weeks but it grew up to be a splendid and amazing companion, very disciplined and loyal and perfect for me since I was away with him the whole time "Chanty" was in name in honor of my dads first and fav dobie when I was a baby, Chanty (a female, i didn't knew back then haha but it seems like a unisex name" then 2 males Nabis and Malik, and Chanty was the female that apparently when I cried she took me out of bed and brought me to my parent their bed and never left my side. Sad I don't have any memories as they were of age when I came and they passed shortly in my pre teen years.

And tbf I wasn't aware then by europe vs american. Now I am abit more, and I love the look of an European but the temperament of an American seems to fit my current lifestyle. But haven't witnessed this so any tips about both are welcome. I know Europeans are thicker, heavier, strongheaded and very active and more suited for working dog and american more for house companion, more into human feelings? also active but not like an european and more athletic, toned. Correct me if I am wrong though as I wasn't very aware but am reading about it more now and watching videos about them. I have 2 sphynxes, no plans for kids and don't think itll ever happen now me and the wife have been pretty consistent now for 11 years that no kids seems to be our way. So yeah maybe American since it might fit better with our lifestyle and cats.
for me the important thing is, this dobie will be my everything in life, I love my cats but a dobie hits different and I plan on doing everything with it, I want to bond with it, give it all the love and attention it needs and receiving it back, cuddles, sleeping (my wife sleeps with the cats so no way she shall deny the dobie laying next to me haha), go our for runs, the cats make me lazy but a dobie will bring that spark that I am missing that gives me the drive to explore and what better way to explore then with a dobie. sorry about the text, got carried away

Can you give me advice on how to spot this in breeders, like you mentioned the go go go or the more companion?

It happens, I saw one dobie cropped and docked from 2023 that got adopted recently. Sad that it happens but it happens non the less, I am following websites that are locally focussed on the dobie rescue so people that give it away they post it

Yeah about the export not sure I am reaching out to breeders but no answers as of yet, guess time will tell and if I have to take a plane there then so be it. Ive read that some breeders employ like a middleman or something don't know the correct term or name that travels in the plane with the dobie but yeah can't confirm or deny this unless a breeder reaches back to me

I will look it up! Thanks, if I have to believe chatgpt, only russia, ukraine, serbia, slovenia (most balkan lands) US, Mexico, Canada (some places, some are banned), Mexico.
But UK seems banned, docking if its for a working dog apparently, and eu is mostly banned but yeah its chatgpt so info can be incorrect

Yeah makes sense, well it doesn't hurt to reach out and I will see when they start getting back to me what their info is. I can only hope

Update: Might have found a country that allows it, Bulgaria, is from the EU and docking and cropping is not explicitly banned. So if it is done by the books, vet and paperwork ok it might be the best way to bring one to here and it is not so far so I could do go there myself

Genuine question for people here, I have a breeder from Serbia that I had contact with before I knew about the RNATT blood test, but this breeder is located in Serbia but they send their pups to Bulgaria; this is one of their quotes

"I have puppies send on Belgium with Bulgarian pet passport like they are born in Bulgaria or Greece depending of agency and no one never had any problems, because puppies are come from EU"
This sounds shady for me

It is not so much American vs Euro it is more working lines vs. show lines. The European working (IGP bitesports) lines are slim, light and athletic. The show dogs are heavier, bigger in size now to the point of what we call hyper-type or over-done. The Sant Kreal (Russia) kennel dogs are show dogs with some lower end sport titles and unless they've changed recently they are slim built and not exaggerated in head and body size. They do carry some DCM lines so if you look into them use that Doberbase.RU to learn more. American show dogs are now getting more bone and chest size to them, not as sleek and light as they use to be. Everything changes throughout the years. The biggest difference will be temperament - if you are looking at a potential puppy and study the pedigree to see if there are working titles or show champion titles or no titles at all.

Use the Doberbase pedigree search to study lines (mostly European based) and for American show dogs use

Dobequest:Dog Search Page

Yes, on average, I think this is a ballpark summarize. But be aware that there are those that do not fall into that. You could get a high drive jacked up NA (North American) or a lazy ass European. Looks are generally the same too…NA are slimmer more sleek whereas Euro are blockier.
But it really depends on what the breeder breeds for…my first male was 100% NA with Conformation Grand Champions all in his pedigree but I swear that boy displayed a hell of a lot more Euro in him than NA.
Freyja- my female is most definitely a NA with some SA in her. She comes from a different well known breeder that has great success with following the Doberman standard with good temperament and characteristics. Freyja is not near as jacked up and wild as my first one. I never really paid too much attention to breeder tendencies until I noticed the physical characteristic differences between mine.

Anyway, seems to me your problem is gonna be finding a breeder that produces the type of Doberman you want. You have no children to bide your time and can put forth the majority of your time with training and bonding with your pup. This is actually ideal and your Doberman will thrive on that. Tbh, that’s really what they were made for. It’s absolutely crazy and special how tight your relationship can be together. He will learn your moves, your thoughts and be there before you get up to perform the action. You are their only world and they do not want to do anything unless it’s with you. A very special relationship if you do it right.

I think you are looking for a mid range Euro or a cross of a NA/Euro. Mid range Euro- one that is not extremely high drive, has a good on/off button, able to settle but turn on when you give him the look. More blocky looking and muscular with a more boxy snout.

They do have some breeders in the US that cross NA/Euro trying to get the best of the both worlds. Sleek but powerful look- bigger, muscular but not so blocky.

Ideally, you would love that look but really, you are looking for the breeding line of a good temperament, impulse control, a good drive but nut crazy arse, and on/off button. For this you really have to dig, research and talk to a lot of breeders and people to get first hand experience on what kind of pups they produce. A good breeder can produce a litter and has the ability to decipher if one of their pups meets the characteristics you are looking for. If not, then they tend to know a circle of breeders that do have the characteristics you are looking for.

I remember with my first one, all I had to do was give home a certain look- his ear went straight, head up and if I nodded my head up/down…it was on. My wife hated it when I did that.
