Angel

Crate training goes back to my early days of learning and researching the basics of owning a Doberman. I looked at my YouTube history and I must have watched 60 different videos on it.
I think crate training is one of those things in which you just have to put in the time and the desired response will come. Some are easy and learn it…some are happy in there and love to go rest in their private lair. Mine only went in the crate if I asked them to do it. They want to be within 5ft of me all the time.
I used the crate in early puppyhood to control the crazy antics, keep them safe, when I left the house and a place to sleep at night. Generally stopped using the crate daily around 6-8months and gave them free rein of the house. It’s been a long time since I put Freyja in there, wife has been trying to get me to break it down and store in the shop but I don’t want to because I may get the itch for a new pup.
I do know that if they are in the crate and are whining, crying, barking…you do not let them out until they are settled and quiet for 3-5mins. This includes coming home to a crated excited pup.
Sometimes you just have to do tough love and refuse to acknowledge or let them out if they won’t settle.
Sometimes you go in there and softly tell them- it’s okay…I am here, it’s alright, calm down.
Sometimes I would sit down next to the crate until they settle. I think it really depends on the Doberman in front of you. Really love that saying from @Ravenbird.

Looking at this video now after years of Doberman experience, I am not for sure how it works but I’ll be damn…it worked with both of mine. You just need to sacrifice 3-5 nights that you know you will be sleeping on the couch.

Good luck and with EVERYTHING in having a Doberman.
Stay patient
Stay consistent
Stay persistent
You cannot break your goals or allow them to slide…
If you stay on course and with purpose…you will be so proud of your perfect companion. It’s amazing what they can become if you do it correctly.

He will do it fine (No really, effing perfectly) for my partner. But I do it and he is on his way to compulsive and neurotic behavior. We are going to try and teach me his way, if that don't work then there are some recs from a trainer.

I will that all the luck. Doing things correctly weighs in my mind a lot.

This is funny…

This is not funny. He is working you instead of you working him. If you are not doing now, you should be feeding him breakfast, lunch, dinner from your hands working on sit, down, follow me, right/side. Letting him know you are the boss and not a push over that his antics can win over. Be stern and consistent but not too much- absolutely gotta have fun in there or you will destroy his Doberman attitude.

Also, who do you want this puppy to bond with? You or your partner? Because he is gonna bond harder to either one of you in my experience….

He gets only gets half rations in his feeding, the rest he works for throughout the day. He's very good and follow, and sit. On hand targeting, and watch me right now.

Me. I want him to bond with me more, but that feels like it is already happening. I'm the one doing most of the engagement training, and socialization. He is more responsive if I call him, is leash trained by me, if he has to pick who to follow/check in with? Me.

Btw..

My Freyja is from Melrae and have to say she is a fantastic Doberman with great temperament and qualities. Has a great on/off button and always eager to please. Protective but very smart about it. Easy to train and runs 5k with me 2x week.

Do it right and you will be ecstatic with the results.

I been studying the happy crating presentation from FDSA, and it says, that panic is not normal and you should not allow panic to continue. You remove them from the crate. Ok, yeah, done. But I still need to be able up put him up so we can sleep, cook, eat, feed the cats, use the restroom, *live*.
I know that crating must be trained but at time of writing, we've had him for 24hrs and need to do it at least every night. He also needs to learn to settle, and self-soothe. I don't want to create a negative association with the crate and have to undo what I broke but we need containment.

Any help is appreciated.

I opt for the 'ignore the whining and it will eventually stop' method.

You constantly letting the dog out when it whines TEACHES the dog that it will get let out if it whines...

I also am a firm believer in using crates for punishment. Any dog that steals food from me is getting locked in their crate for a while so they can 'think about' what they just did for a while. Will not cause the dog any harm in doing so...

I would stop reading any junk from the FDSA if that is what they is telling you.

UPDATE:
He's growing so fast -- I know puppies grow fast -- I didn't expect him to be visibly bigger from one day to the next.

He's more rambunctious by the day; he needs to be restrained from being too reckless for his own good. Yesterday, he tried to do a stage dive onto the patio.

We went for a socialization sniffy at a memorial park yesterday; worked on watch me while there were people, cars and little grounds keeper vehicles (they look like a Playskool Cozy Coupe) puttering around. Saw some deer.

He's a sleepy little delight in the car.
We did some kitty introductions, he just looked --not keyed. We also used chicken as a treat for this, my partner learned that, yes, chicken > kibble.

We had a "Doberman Moment" the other night when he saw big shadows on the side of the house paired with some noises the wind and he stopped, growled a tiny bit and walked confidently over to investigate. Of course there's nothing there so he comes back to playing.

And last night I successfully crated him multiple times, and he settled in about 5 min. He might be flank sucking a little, but it isn't coupled with the noises and the hard breathing.
Feeling optimistic.

Pics from yesterday's sniffy adventure

Right?? I was amazed too. I haven't had a doberman puppy since 1995. Annie seemed to grow by the hour! 🤣

My favorite thing about my new 'used' Dober girl is that she is not a puppy and there is no puppy training stuff required with her. Somebody else did all of that work! :)

I meant to mention that pups from these lines go through their teenage phase a lot earlier than other Dobermans we've had. The good news is that they got through it faster too.

How much earlier we talking? He's definitely exhibiting some new selective hearing and pretending he doesn't know commands he was performing reliably just a few days ago; like Off! (All 4 feet on the floor, especially not on my couch), Leave It!
He's more mouthy these days, wants to chew on things.
He's so cuddly and sweet. He's doing good meeting the cats. He even did a spectacular "watch me" when we encountered some deer up close.

He knows his potty words; went trotting through the room pretending he can't hear me, when I said the potty words he spun around on his hinds and went running to the door. We never practiced this. He also taught himself to go to the back door and whine and tap when he wants to go out.

I'm about to jinx it, but he's getting better about crate and being left alone. Been doing the time in crate and stretching the intervals, you only get out when you're quiet, and no shrieking, pawing at the door or self-harm. No need for such carry on, you're ok.

My baby is disappearing before my eyes, he's bigger daily, his coat is changing. I start every day thinking I love him so much, and I end it the same way, but I'm also wondering what he'd taste like.

I can't wait until we start kindergarten in a few weeks -- I'll learn how to be a better trainer and how to teach him all kinds of new things. I'm sure that it will be some mix of making the other teams look like schnooks and embarrassing mom to death.

Yes, he's pictured asleep because then he's still.

Most of our other ones hit the phase where they wanted to challenge you at around 7 months but these pups started at about 4 months and were done by 7 months, give or take.

That's just normal puppy behavior for all breeds.

It sounds like things are going great so far though.

I am very impressed…
You are doing a great job.

It’s funny because you can’t make up fake success with a Doberman, you have to experience first hand to be able to explain it the way you are. Haha.

Keep being consistent and maintain the standard, it’s about time he starts ignoring you and trying to do his own thing.

Imo, the time and energy you put in- is mandatory to establish the unbreakable bond you two will have. It’s amazing when you finally see/feel it.
