Yeah, other than being loud and a little icky looking, they are pretty harmless. I've been hearing of people like cancelling or postponing outside activities because of them

they can be VERY loud during the day but they quiet down around sunset, I believe.
We get them every year but there will be trillions this year with the 13 year and 17 year emergence coinciding.
I find them quite entertaining in their chaos! Emerge, molt, breed, die.
We have so many in our actual yard because that giant parkway tree that was cut down about 18 months ago likely had roots that extended waaaaaay out. They live in the tree roots and then emerge where ever they landed. I'm sure we'll continue to see them in the yard for a few years but, at some point, I suspect since there isn't a 50ft tree there, anymore, they'll exhaust themselves (not a hot spot for laying eggs). And yes! Even though they live in/on the roots of trees, they don't do much damage and then once they die and decay, it's like a nutrient blast to the trees, from what I've read.
I know my chicken LOVE them. Rumor does too! I'm not sure if it's eating them or chasing them down for the kill, but she does eat them.

I guess people eat them too. There is a lchef the is going to cicada cooking demonstration.
On Friday, May 24, the bug experts of the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House will put on their chefsā hats to cook up some cicada-centric dishes and educate the public on entomophagy ā the practice of eating insects.

Our favorite local brewery has Cicada Malort shots! 100% chance I'll be doing one.
Moo's rejection was the funniest part of the video for me! I thought Labs eat anything and everything, or at least that seems to be their reputation.
He rejected it so adorably!
Moo is pretty gentle with wildlife whereas Rubie has very different opinions
