Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Well I hope they are a delicacy to all the other animals and birds! I know Ruby loves them! Maybe that helps feed the population cuz otherwise I don't know why God created these! šŸ¤”

I know my chicken LOVE them. Rumor does too! I'm not sure if it's eating them or chasing them down for the kill, but she does eat them. :wtf3:
I guess people eat them too. There is a lchef the is going to cicada cooking demonstration.

Yeah, other than being loud and a little icky looking, they are pretty harmless. I've been hearing of people like cancelling or postponing outside activities because of them šŸ™„ they can be VERY loud during the day but they quiet down around sunset, I believe.

We get them every year but there will be trillions this year with the 13 year and 17 year emergence coinciding.

I find them quite entertaining in their chaos! Emerge, molt, breed, die.

We have so many in our actual yard because that giant parkway tree that was cut down about 18 months ago likely had roots that extended waaaaaay out. They live in the tree roots and then emerge where ever they landed. I'm sure we'll continue to see them in the yard for a few years but, at some point, I suspect since there isn't a 50ft tree there, anymore, they'll exhaust themselves (not a hot spot for laying eggs). And yes! Even though they live in/on the roots of trees, they don't do much damage and then once they die and decay, it's like a nutrient blast to the trees, from what I've read.

Our favorite local brewery has Cicada Malort shots! 100% chance I'll be doing one.

Moo's rejection was the funniest part of the video for me! I thought Labs eat anything and everything, or at least that seems to be their reputation.
He rejected it so adorably!

Moo is pretty gentle with wildlife whereas Rubie has very different opinions šŸ˜‚

It's funny I have been mistakenly thinking the brown thrasher is my mockingbird. I haven't seen the Mockingbird in a long time and he's one of my favorites. It seems like all the different calls that they make within seconds is actually the brown thrasher. The Mockingbird does that too. So a lot of mornings when I hear all these different calls I thought it was Mockingbird but as you can see by what my Merlin app is picking up it is indeed the brown thrasher! No Mockingbird in sight. Or soundšŸ˜‰ Well I'll be!

My app is struggling with identification because of the chickens. I guess they make noises that confuse Merlin.
I was wondering what ours would do when Howard (the parrot) was talking in the background, but it ignores him. LOL

This video from youtube is clips from a (video) critter cam in the Gila Nat'l Forest. It's obviously in a much wetter environment than where I live, probably closer to the Gila river itself, but it's still part of the same forest that surrounds me. So those of you who ask about lions and bears and bobcats (and more!) here they are, frolicking around, bears doing the famous back-scratching etc... I have to wonder about the critter cam, it must be a mighty fine one to get this kind of quality! Enjoy!

So there's definitely a space that the bats have found between the chimney outside the house and inside the house. Yesterday found TWO hanging near the ceiling. Heavy gloves and tall ladder I did capture and release. This one was lots bigger, maybe a different kind, I don't know. It wouldn't fly at first, maybe playing dead in fear? But it finally took off. The dogs went nuts when they realized I was catching winged mice and of course I squealed like a girl when the first one bit my glove in self defense. No it didn't go through the glove but it made little angry cries. Asha was barking her fool head off. I can fantasize she was trying to save me from the bat, but probably she just wanted to catch it herself. Reckless was in on it too, she just doesn't bark as much. Anyway, here's to bats roosting in my house.

Some of you may remember Rumor likes to bring me turtles and drop them at my feet. Well guess what? Turtles eat cicadas so turtles are EVERYWHERE! It's 11 am and so far I have received 6 turtle gifts. šŸ˜‚
BTW, cicadas also attract copperheads. 😯 As long as she doesn't bring me one of those...

So far we haven't seen any! And that's just fine with me! I'm not complaining! šŸ˜…

I walked out of the house yesterday and this guy flew on me. He startled me and I waved my hand and he flew off and onto our Grill. When I realized what it was, I'm like it's okay! Come, let's take a picture! 😁
