So yesterday I took Asha on a hike. To walk the trail I wanted to do we go down the dirt road where private property area goes back to Nat'l Forest. A cattle guard is there with a walk through gate next to it. We've been through there a hundred times, Asha is always off leash and always waits at the gate for me to catch up and open it. Which she did on the way out. For whatever reason, on the way back she just decided to jump the cattle guard. Which is about a 5 - 6 foot broad jump. I didn't even see it, I was only about 20 feet behind, but it's down a hill from it and out of sight - and heard a "clang" of metal, ran up to see and she's on the other side of the cattle guard holding a back leg up. Talk about panic - I ran to catch up, and she's trotting off not putting any weight on that leg, holding it in the air as she trotted. I yelled WAIT - another great command to teach! - and she stopped. I leashed her up and felt her all over, a tiny bit of hair off over her stifle is all. I walked her for about 50 feet and she went from 3 legged to gimping to OK to fine. I took the leash off and she trotted away from me perfectly sound. Whew. We were only about 1/4 mile from the house so not far to go. Watched her like a hawk and no signs of lameness. I guess like us hitting our knee on a table - think we're going to die for about 3 minutes but then it's just fine. Guess I'll be leashing up every time we get close to the cattle guard now.

I can relate Stassi is the first dog I’ve owned, that I actively have to keep her from hurting herself. Generally from jumping off or over something too big. Lol

I looked up cattle guard and they appear to pipes laid into the road. Cars can drive over them but people and animals cannot. We call them a Texas gate here. Those are pretty scary. Are you thinking she caught her foot in it? But you saw hair torn on the knee area? I wonder if the sound you heard was her toe nails hitting the metal? Thank goodness she didn’t limp for long.

Looked into it a bit more and apparently Texas gate is a Canadian term which is not used in America. Go figure.

I had never heard of a cattle guard either but how scary. I'm glad she's okay now.

Yup, that's her alright.

I'm thinking the back leg probably dropped down between the slats and so the front of the knee hit the metal, and toenails scrabbling on it as she pulled out. She could have been trying to run across it, but more likely jumped and just missed with her landing. Aggravating that I didn't get to see it, but probably would have had a heart attack if I had, so there's that. All's well that ends well, right?

Damn Dobermans!!

Always finding a way to gives us that max rush of dopamine and heart racing at 200bpm.

Asha’s a tough girl…I am sure she was just living up to her rep.

Really hope she is alright!

She seems just fine, no worries. What really stinks is that the gate would be a piece of cake for her to go through without me opening it and nothing to get hurt on, so if she wasn't going to wait, she could have taken a much easier route. 🙄

Went to town today, so stopped to take photos of the thing. 6' across, anywhere from 1' to 2' down to the ground between the slats. Each slat is about 6" apart. The trail to go out to the forest the way I want to hike is next to this but full of shrub oak, and a drop off of about 15 feet down, but right next to the cattle guard, I just couldn't see her. Maybe these will give you a better idea, and also why the gate (to the right on the first photo) would have been the easier, safer choice. LOL, this post is more about my trauma than the dog. She had never shown any interest or desire to even think about going over, she would wait at the gate.
