Back to posting -No Bridge?

Hey Doberman Fam!

As many of you know, a few days ago we had our first bump in the road with posting. Vito’s ear had got some slight damage, and we had to stop posting for a few days and give the ear a chance to heal… surprisingly, (to me) it healed rather quick. You all gave some solid feedback and advice which I am grateful for.

I decided to reach out to my breeder and talk with him a while, some general convo about dogs, and about Vito’s ear. He - The breeder uses the backer rod method, however he doesn’t use any bridge. So we decided to try posting without the bridge, so far-so good! Vito seems to take to it a lot better, no scratching, minimal head shakes, and no pawing at the posts.

What are you thoughts on not using a bridge? Do the ears still stand relatively good without it? As always, thanks in advance for your feedback!

*Snapped a couple of pics of Vito before I crated him to clean up the man cave lol5553F631-F153-4309-9DC3-ED7F5701E7FE.webpA76134AB-70EB-4A7D-A423-AE4149769168.webp

Looks good!

What kind of tape are you using for he back tape?

I'm a firm believer in NOT using the bridge after the first or second posting so your breeder is right. Yes, he has enough control not to use it and if you continued to do so, they could start pulling in to the center.

Even for back taping the post? I've never seen it with hearts before but I like it.
Lol. I totally misunderstood what you meant… it’s been a long week! Grateful that it’s my Friday! At any rate, that’s a breathable self adhesive wrap, it’s at petco/petsmart. When I get in, I’ll let you know the exact name and brand

I only use the bridge for the first week or so then I want the ears to learn to stand. I am so onky use one piece of tape at the base and one at the tip to hold the backer rod in. Don’t like all the extra taping of the ear plus makes sure you don’t tape them to right.

my issue with the bridge is the thing would pop out at the bottom no matter how I set it even after watching a video of it. Its a struggle due to tape not sticking more than a day. I am still searching and ordered from amazon what reviews said would stick better. It was also pourous sports tape

If you are having issues with sticking you could use adhesive like torbots or ostobond. I've posted 4 dobes now and my one boy Revel has the most notoriously difficult ears for the posts popping out. His ear canals are small and won't take the post. Any smaller of backer rod thickness and they are too small and loose and rub his ears raw from him shaking. Half posts once his bases were set has been better. Or zip tie.

I realized what I was doing wrong. I cut my backer rod at a slant where it goes down into the ear and not as much of the cotton wrap. I know I was making that to large as well and went with my hair rods instead . removing the wire they make the perfect ear posting tool. . it seems to have done the trick. I was using way to big a rod. Also I watched videos for ideas on youtube since its been so long for me. I also saw that I was not making smooth back wrap with my sports tape making her ears itch a lot. It also seems to have done the trick. I went over tip of ear and it seems to have made it worse so I just do 2 wraps and minimulist style and shes good now 3 days. I should not have more than 3 weeks to go since she has a medium ear. one stands very well but still week. I just keep them both wrapped.
