Ace-Doberman Ear Posting

Hey guys, I was hoping to get some advice for my 9 month old Doberman Ace.

I got him at 6 weeks old and got his ears cropped at 9 weeks and have been posting ever since. His right ear is doing amazing and I haven’t had to keep posting that one since he was 7 months old, though I have been having some trouble with his left ear. I had taken the post out to test his ear and see if it was done and he’s lasted up to 9 days before it starts to flop a little, it’ll still go up sometimes but not as much as the right ear. I’m going to of course keep posting, but I want to know if y’all think his ear is getting close to being done or if I should be worried about anything? I use the tampon posting method and make sure to stick it in his ear as far as it’ll go and secure the wrap without making it too tight. Also the tip of his left ear slightly bends outward, I’ve been using breath right strips to try and straighten that out. Is there anything else I can do to help that as well?

Thank you all in advance for you advice, I’ll add some photos to go with the post! :)

Welcome from Alabama!

Some dogs take upwards (sometimes over) 12 months, so you're a bit ahead of that game. Just as some dogs can be finished by 7 months, one ear could be done and the other still needs support.

Joker's littermate was done with posting at about 7 1/2 months. Joker's ears took about 10 months. Their father on the other hand was about 15 months, as his ear leather was pretty thick and heavy.

I would recommend you keep posting. It looks like you're doing a great job. Stick with it! Don't give the ear any time to droop at all.
Good looking boy! Love the name!

Thank you Panama,

I’ve heard of some owners having to post up to 14 months, and I’m willing to do it for as long as it takes I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything I need to worry about or do differently.

Ace does have more so of a thick leather ear so that does make sense! I’m a first time Doberman owner and he’s my dream dog so I’ve been doing as much research as possible about his breed and the ear posting process and I’ve learned a lot!

Thank you for the boost of reassurance and advice!!

Yay!!! The left ear is at least fully standing!

When I see titles like this, I cringe in opening- hoping not to see broken/creased ears of yahoos who didn’t post right and now want an immediate fix.

You’re doing it right, just keep on keeping on with the strips. If it appears he needs a full posting for a week then do that and then go back to the strips. You are sooo close and you will get there.

My Freyja’s left ear was a PITA too and I find it funny that after a really hard bout of play with Ragnar, her left ear will flop around a little while the right is straight.

Well done 👍 Keep on going with the posting. That's a happy and handsome boy you've got. The Batman bandana is perfect on him!

Same!
