Dobe bit me in the face while nail trimming

The ONLY downside I see is that they advertise a diamond bit but when I purchased it, they said that most people buy a replacement bit within 4 months

Yeah I have to say it looks similar to The Diamond bit but I'm sure I paid almost $100 for it. I might be mistaken. I'll have to look it up. But I know it was more than $15 LOL



it was quite pricey. But this one looks like it's working quite well for you! His nails look great!

You can get cheap imitation versions of the diamond groove but they don’t eliminate vibration or stay cool and not get hot. We bought ours at a dog show a few years ago. It was over $100 also but came with cleaning kit. It will never wear out so worth the money if you have multiple dogs and plan to for your life.

The "never wears out" part is what sold me on it. I hated changing the Sandpaper thing and a couple of times I had that sandpaper suddenly disintegrate as I was doing nails. It would scare the hell out of both me and my dog! Plus that thing flapping around probably could hurt somebody. Yeah I was done with the Sandpaper.

I've been using the same stone bit for years. I don't know what kind of stone (certainly not diamond) but yeah I wouldn't use a sandpaper bit. I almost always wear goggles when doing nails, but would definitely wear them if using a sandpaper bit.

Weird thing is the bit I've been using for so long now has the middle worn down, making a sort of figure 8 shape. I wore it down some years ago trying to grind something metal.

I didn’t know you could use the stone bit. I’ve been using the sandpaper and will watch for wear and tear. The flapping would freak me out too. I wear goggles and a dust mask. So many flying shards of nail!

I wonder if the sandpaper that comes with dremels from the hardware store are different than pet trimming ones. I am on my second sandpaper attachment since I got Jasper (2yrs) and I trim him ever 6 days. Still grinds his nails down fast. Maybe the ones I have are more coarse? However they do get hot. So I definitely have to watch out for that!

So Moose doesn't let me dremmel his nails. It's too loud and too grindy, I think. Just the overall sensation of it.

One of the accounts I follow on IG swears by the Pawineer Puptrimmer Pro and had a discount code so I figured, what the heck.

I wanted to try it several times before offering an opinion but so far, I've been able to do Moo's nails without *much* pushback from him. I really wasn't sure if it would be up to the task for Rubie's nails since they're much harder. If definitely takes longer but she's more tolerant of it than the dremmel and it does not run out of charge (rechargeable via provided cable). I've been working with Moo on an almost daily basis. His nails are longer than I like so I was taking him ever two weeks to a locally owned place within walking distance. I figured at $15 a pop, a new trimmer would pay for itself within a couple of months.

Since it's cordless, I can just grab it and take Moo outside and do a quick grind on each nail. Rubie still get's the grooming arm because, again, hers are done weekly and just take longer. Much easier to maneuver than the full sized, plug in dremmel.

I'm thinking it's not a true diamond bit. They're listed for $10 on their website though so not a show stopper. Moo's toes are looking pretty good!! AND (lucky dogs!) I'm going to bring it camping so as not to miss a beat.

OK. So I actually bought the puptrimmer pro too and I wanted to come to this forum to see if people were talking about it. Glad to see another dobie owner has it and is getting great results with it. I completely agree with you- it has saved me so much money. Im probably going to get one for my parents so they can use it on theirs!

Folks I have to admit I have anxiety over this – nail trimming. It's a cycle: I dread the trimming so I put it off. Putting it off makes it worse, which increases my dread and anxiety.

As I mentioned above, I have come to believe that Oji is just naturally a Dobe that hates not only to have anything done to him, but most of all hates to have his paws handled. (Well, he may even more hate having his temperature taken in the traditional way). What's more, I believe he actually has unusually sensitive nails. I could go into this further sometime.

It's not getting bitten that I fear, as I muzzle him. Getting cracked in the face is a concern, yes.

No, it's the fear of the whole situation. I cannot let a bite attempt, or even a snap at me, go unanswered. I believe that if I did, Oji would become a dog for which it becomes impossible to even handle his paws. He would learn he can terrorize his way out of ever having his paws touched.

There's no good solution I can think of. I can't administer a physical correction severe enough that makes it worth it to him to not snap at me. Doing so would be at the level of what most could consider abuse. What's more, if I get too firm with him in these situations, he just becomes more aggressive. He doesn't back down or submit. I do think he is acting out of fear actually, but he acts aggressively and dangerously just the same.

I have read in an old book that you can break a dog of biting the handler by hanging it from a choke collar and leash until it passes out. I'm not willing to do that, and I imagine it would not solve the problem. Oji would wake up and be unchanged, and continue his patterns of behavior.

How I wish there was a pill I could give him that would make him so drowsy he would be essentially passed out. I could knock out a complete nail trim session in less than five minutes, I'm sure!

As it is, he is slowly damaging our hardwood floors pretty badly.

I don’t back down though as if I do she knows she can get out of nail trimming. What did you end up doing? I know I have time to work on this she’s 5 months.

If you are able, clip her lead high like they do at the groomers. That way she can’t bite you. Then pick her foot up like you would a horse’s, so that you are looking at the pad of her foot. It is much easier to visualize the quick. It is painful if you cut too close to it. The groomers at the kennel nearby will dremel nails for $15. It is not a bad deal.

Wow I didn’t know even getting close is painful. Crap now I feel bad. I’m going to see if the vet can dremmel her. I really am stressed about doing that too.

I have terrible anxiety with nails as a child i remember my dad would always hit the quick on our first Dobe. Freaking terrible.

I also use the prong collar because she knows from walking with it that it is not something she wants to pull against. I never tie the leash, just flop it one round over the rail, so there is no way she can get in a wreck and it works like a pully. I can pull the end of the leash and it tugs her head to the rail. A tree or post with a eye bolt works too. Sounds like Pepper is not so much against nail work as just being held down/held still/being told what to do. I'd find a good place to tie her, then just train this every.single.day. Tie her, pick up each foot, squeeze each toe, use her breakfast if you have to, but treat after each toe squeeze when she doesn't react. Work up to a treat after each foot. If you have a dremmel, turn it on and leave it running a few feet away. Never let her win. You should do toenails every week when they are young so it becomes a normal thing. Every month or two at that age is not a learning experience, just a fight. If you don't have the dremmel tool, I suggest getting one. The squeeze of the clippers is uncomfortable for many dogs, and also with the dremmel you have a lot less chance of quicking them. You just back off, whereas clippers once you cut into the nail you have to keep going.

Great ideas thank you both for this information. She is hit or miss been fine when I’ve tipped them and then sometimes nope goes nuts. Growling and nipping at me. I’ve been doing them weekly just a tiny bit off.

I will get a dremmel as much as that scares me.

She did the same when I started posting her ears flipped her lid. Now that’s a breeze.

Don’t want her to hate me for doing her nails for real. I didn’t quit last night, but she got crazy and I didn’t let her get her way. Totally fine with me touching her feet just not nail trimming at times.

So when you do the feet with no clippers really squeeze the toes like you have to hold them to clip or dremmel. If that is still ok hold the tool in your hand and go through the motions without cutting. Treat & repeat. The purpose of this is to turn this into a feed fest for her, not a fight for dominance!

I got so use to doing Asha standing up I forgot how easy it is to do if they lay down, and just recently did Ashas nails while she laid on the couch and I sat on the floor. The couch is off limits for her, so it was a cross between getting to be on the couch and having the nails dremmeled but I wish I had transitioned her to this position earlier. Right now Pepper just needs to learn that she has no choice, that this thing is going to happen and no amount of protest will make it stop. And besides food happens so it ain't all bad.
