Oh wow!! He’s so graceful in the water. Really such a beautiful dog.
Did he swim on his own or did it take a bit of encouragement? Our mix pup is a very awkward swimmer and seems pretty scared to wade in deeper than she can touch. I’m unfairly comparing her to a past lab mix who we couldn’t keep out of the water!

He started out about 5 months just wading in. I would throw sticks out and eventually he would just stand up to his belly. What really got him going in was the whole family and my dad’s Dutch Shepherd swimming around. Once he went all the way out and swam he loved it from that moment on. Was a bit nervous when I seen him go out after watching so many other dobies do the sink and splash with the front legs. But thank goodness that didn’t happen.

The sink and splash - yes, that’s exactly how I’d describe Birdie’s only attempt at swimming 
. Hubby was close by to grab her.
Thanks for sharing! I hope that she eventually grows to enjoy swimming as we live on the water and it’s fun exercise. We’ll keep trying some gentle encouragement as you suggested but will be perfectly happy if she ends up being just a wader

That big deep chest can make some dogs feel awkward in the water. Try a life vest to help get the flotation down and proceed slowly. We have a couple of boats and spend most of our free time on the river. I haven't had a dobe yet that didn't love to swim. One girl had to be introduced slower to the idea but wasn't long before we called her a fish.

He’s an awesome swimmer, wow. Mine is still wading but has gone in deep enough include part of the chest but his neck and most of his back fur stays dry. Slooooow progress lol. Great idea to throw in a stick or ball so I will have to try that. I have a life vest for Kaiser so I will try that too!
