Do Dobermans howl much?

Last night the Dingos were howling out across the creek again and Jazz stood in the door for a while and then let out a beautiful howl! Not very loud, but a rich, full howl with all the proper inflections!!! :woot2: And it then occurred to me that I don't think I've ever heard her howl before, not even as a pup and away from her litter for the first time. In fact the howl would probably be just about the only sound that she hasn't made. Is howling the one vocal thing a Doberman doesn't do much?

Rocky doesn’t really howl.
He does a whiney wooWoo when he wants attention. But full on howl?
Nope.
We don’t have Dingo’s, lol but we have the American less equivalent coyote.
They make noise around here often, and make more when police or sirens wail.
He never howls at them.
Would be a bit entertaining though :D

The girls howl for certain music, when they hear other dogs howling or when we squeak a toy very slowly!

Interesting..............sounds like more Dobes don't howl than do. (Dog on heat next door I don't think counts as that is just torture for the lad!)
Last night Jazz touched my leg to wake me and I thought she needed to go out so out we went into the bush. A Dingo set up a good howling from fairly close so we just stood and listened. Dogs from far and wide were joining in, but Jazz just decided to give a few good barks in the end and it all went quiet! Wonder what she said? Bugger off in dog language no doubt!

Dingos never bark, just howl, but their howling has a lot of different inflections, even an almost screaming note. It's breeding season and I think what is happening is that males are crossing our path and following us home. Jazz is neutered but is having hormone tablets for spay incontinence which is making her a bit alluring maybe! :bat:

I've never heard Buddy howl either. I know a few friends that have either a lab and /or lab mix who's dog howls every Tuesday with the tornado siren testing. I was just on the phone last Tuesday with my friend while her dog was howling in the background. I think it's pretty funny. I would love to hear Buddy howl! ;)

It's interesting how much a breed can vary even within "types." I've had working Dobes for my last two, and a sort of random breeding / pet Doberman for my first. The first two never howled that I recall – definitely not the first one. Oji here? Yes, he will howl. I have posted a few videos in "Random Video" of it – mostly him standing at the open front door and howling as the tornado sirens get tested on Tuesdays.

I have seen him howl at times when left on the back porch and maybe feeling lonely, but probably also stimulated by some distant noise or something.

I have seen him howl at a propeller airplane noise in the sky. :lolsign:

Oh, and how could I forget? He howls big time when my daughter practices violin!

Some of his howling, like the violin howling, is usually somewhat higher pitched. I like the nice deep, mournful stuff.

I like how he goes up on his tippy toes when howling.

Aw, man, you need to catch more of that on video! That's got to be a sight to see. Get that violin out! LOL

There is something about that rich, deep howl! Jazz didn't sound mournful................just like she would like to communicate with the Dingos but didn't quite dare! It was a beautiful sound and quite different from any other dog I've had before. (Don't know why I am still surprised by the differences that bit of Dobe blood makes!)
Bogie has a pitch perfect howl.
Yes! For something that gets no practice at all it raises the hairs on your arms!

I’ve heard Brinks make noises I didn’t know were even possible, but now that I think of it I’ve never heard him howl.

I haven’t heard any of the other two howl either.

I’ve heard Ragnar howl twice and must admit that I think it sounds awesome. Problem is that he only does it every now and then. I can’t tell what causes it. Must be something on another frequency.

I would love to record it one day but he is so sporadic.

If we could all manage to record our dobies doing the melodic howl we could piece together an audio of the Singing Dobermans Quartet. :D
Personally I think it would be awesome!!

The first Doberman I had would howl whenever he heard sirens. Sometimes I could howl and get him going too. Other times he would look at me like I was an idiot...

The current two have not howled yet. I may try to teach them, as it is very wolf like and majestic.

When we are out on a walk or run and an emergency vehicle approaches, he starts howling when it gets near. He goes up on his hind legs as I am restraining him by the leash and he is howling right at the vehicle. I've seem firefighters and EMTs get a kick out of it.
