Fed wrong food...

So as most of you know my little guy had an allergic reaction to his vaccines earlier in the week and coccidia. He had been eating a special diet. “Hill prescription diet” which consists of chicken broth, chicken, carrots and rice. His poops had solidified up and he was feeling better. I had originally planned to ween him back to his original dog food slowly. Replacing 1/4 of each feeding with his kibble.

However, I was gone for most of the day and someone had been watching him. They decided to feed him without asking me what food and they fed him his original kibble and not the special food.

My question is this, what am I in store for? Usually he poops twice a day on this diet. However, he had his original poop after feeding but now he had an emergency poop. Which isn’t diarrhea and is solid but out of the norm of the last few days.

Should I keep an eye on him all night? Should I worry about him getting the poops? Am I in store for a long night? Should I continue feeding all kibble now for each meal since that’s what he just got?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

His original food is something he is used to. I wouldn't worry about that, other than checking on him every few hours. But I prefer to leave detailed instructions for sitters.

He’s already had an additional poop that’s out of the norm, should that not be a big deal?

He hasn’t eaten the food for about 5 days now.

Sorry, I’m just worried little dudes been having a crappy time for the last week and I don’t want him to have another case of the runs or tummy problems.

However I did give him his last serving of medicine to kill the bacteria

I wonder if Rex has stomach issues. We had to switch to raw because his stool was hardly ever solid while on kibble.

If he is still alert and playful, I would not worry at this point.

It may be he is sensitive to his original food if these issues are cropping up. I would seriously consider researching for a better food for him.

Hill’s prescription food is not a good food even though the vets recommend it. Remember most vets learn nutrition from the Hill’s, Royal Canin companies and not from research or study with animal nutritionists.
My twins Cardiologist refuses to stock ANY prescription dog foods in his office. He calls them crap and recommends raw or home cooked meals and will give information sheets on both.

If he was fed off schedule that will cause the extra poop. Wouldn’t worry about that unless I noticed him starting to back track. Just personal opinion but I agree with @Tropicalbri's if you notice issues on his normal kibble I’d switch it (slowly with the past issues) and I don’t know about pricing where you are but totw is just as bout as costly as other better brand foods here. I’ve personalled used orijen, acana, nulo, and raw instinct all with great results.

I’m not sure what time she fed him so that may be it, or it may have been the meds for coccidia. I’m paying like 40 dollars for 30 pounds but he was having solid poops before. He started having the diarrhea when he got vaccines and I was mixing raw food and supplements with his kibble.

I would just feed one or the other, now that the vaccines are thru his system he should be fine. Do you know what vaccines were given? Was it a 4-way or 5-way vaccine? One my past dogs had an allergic reaction to his vaccines when he was a pup and I told the vet so they switch for his next series of shots an he was fine.

I don’t remember but he is finished with his vaccines now. Minus rabbies and litro? Atleast this is what I was told. His poop was hard this morning. However he’s already pooped twice today, which is out of the norm.

I would not allow them to give another Leptospirosis vaccine, Flu vaccine or the Bordetella.

I believe you had said he got the DHPP, with the flu vaccine and Leptospirosis as well as Bordetella.

They made a huge deal about the leptospirosis when I brought it up saying it’s not needed. They said “if you plan on bringing your dog around any other dog you need it”. So I take it as they are full of it.

Honestly what shots does he need?

Leptospirosis is not one of the core vaccines and never will be because the vaccine only reduces the symptoms if he is infected with the leptospira. It is a zoonotic, meaning it can be transferred to humans. If you live in a tropical, subtropical, marshy, wet location then you might be at a higher risk of contact. If your dog comes into contact via mucosal membranes, cuts, etc. with the urine of rats and other vermin, wildlife animals that are infected with it, then he MIGHT acquire it. There are so many strains of lepto and the vaccine only covers some.
So unless you live in a damp, wet, marshy, tropical area and allow your dog to lick water from any sources other than what you provide and it is contaminated with infected urine then I would not get the vaccine. Hunting dogs would be at a higher risk because they are in an area heavy with wildlife.
I avoid dog parks for many reasons and this is just one of the many reasons.
I live in an area that is heavily populated with wildlife, rats, lots of rats, even some of the rats are a protected species, marshy area, rain and tropical where stagnant water is readily found even in plants that hold water. I don’t get the vaccine for my dogs.
I would only get the core vaccines until they finish their first year. After that into the second year, I would do titers and only get the vaccines if the titers show no immunity.
Vaccines are an animal hospital’s bread and butter. It is why clients come back yearly for vaccines. They get a notice from the clinic that they are due and people just assume they are absolutely necessary. They aren’t.
I would limit your dog’s exposure to areas that might be a problem and check your dog everyday for cuts or abrasions as this is an entry point for the spirochetes to spiral into the skin.
Clean and treat all wounds immediately, restrict exposure to muddy, stagnant waters, lakes and other areas inhabited by wildlife and their urine.
