That's not odd hehe ..that's just a normal Doberpose!  It's strange but Jake never does. this though and he's the only dober I have ever had that just never lays on his back..He is different that way and I know he has a good back but it's just not his style..lol ..He is my first grinner too..I can never catch him at it ..he is too sneaky for me. :tap:

Drogon never lays on his back either. The only times I've seen him on his back was briefly when he was scratching his back in the grass. I don't know about Jake but Drogon is a very dominate dog and I assume the two are related. Laying on their back is a submissive pose and Drogon is not one to be submissive.

Bogie will lay on his back when he is with me but I have never seen him lay on his back with other people around. He is the consummate patroller. He patrols our house and yard and will come to me barking then run back to whatever it is that is conerning him. It's as if to say "please come look."
If I take him to a property with me he instantly runs and checks everything out and when he is satisfied all is well he will return and place himself to my left side, like the 'All Clear' signal.

That's a very good thought but I don't think that is the reason necessarily ..Jake is really not an alpha male ..I have no idea why but I think it is more rare..most every dog I have ever had has slept on their back..so it's a bit of a mystery. I always rather thought Jake does not do it because he feels vulnerable ..I guess we will never really know for sure.

Kaiser doesn't lay on his back either and I thought all dogs did. I saw him roll over once...maybe in his first 2 weeks with us. I rubbed his belly thinking it was an invitation and then he got up. Never did it again as a small pup. As a grown pup I've seen him roll over in his crate a few times, but never where I could rub his belly. Maybe he does it at night when no one can see him? I assumed he wasn't comfortable enough, but even around us? Or am I mixing dog behavior with cats? The submission is an interesting point. I never see him roll over even with his doggy friends (dogs that are very familiar to him). As far as pack structure, I figured K is a middle of the pack kind of dog. Wouldn't that make him somewhat submissive? He plays well with older dogs and young pups.

This would make an interesting thread. What do you think? You want to start one, @Kaiser2016? I find it an interesting topic of conversation :)

Albert sleeps on his back all the time and I always take it is being confidant and comfortable enough to go into the position. In Albert's case it's not being submissive, but really relaxed.

On back smiling May 17 17.webp

Della never sleeps on her back but if she's outside on a warm day she'll roll over and be on her back briefly.

Rubie will definitely sleep on her back if it's just me and Norris but not when anyone else is around. She'll also dramatically fall over onto her back when she's feeling particularly silly. I always understood it to be a sign of feeling safe and comfortable in their situation because being on their back exposes all their organs but whoooooo knows! Maybe it's just not comfortable for some pooches as I'm sure most pooches here feel safe in their home environments.

I wonder if Albert is able to relax because he knows he can rely on Della to save the day. :woot2:

I also think it's a sign of comfort to expose their organs (that's like a cat) but K doesn't do this! Sometimes I go to him while he's curled up in his bed (outside the crate) and try to rub along his ribs. I think he can sense what I'm about to do so he usually gets up before I reach his belly. Too bad I cannot sneak up on him to see how he sleeps at night!
