with bonus footage of Dobermans! For all you doberman owners that may be considering the sport of Dock Diving :)

More stuff and some more jumps of the doberman can be found in the full unedited version here.

That was freaking AWESOME!!!! I love slo mo and in this type of venue its amazing! I smiled through it all, chuckled at a few and then LAUGHED when I saw the dachshund!! I'm like, oh, a little dog? and then he comes into view! Omg, so adorable!!! Thanks for posting that! I totally enjoyed it!

That's awesome! You should get one for Java to wear when she does it. I've been wanting one for a long time now, but then I wonder if the novelty would wear off after a few times.

WOW - did you see the Dobe ---perfect form and held still til the drop while the other dogs flayed front and back legs a little causing drag. Dobes ROCK!!!

That little dog was working his hardest!!!

Besides the dobe, my favorite was the cat toy being thrown. :D

The elevated toy (Fetch-It) definitely helps the dog build the muscle memory and learn how to jump appropriately.

I thought the same too. Java doesn't get much big air so that also helps the deciding factor for me, haha. Although, we went to practice last weekend and she didn't hesitate at all (something we've been working on) and jumped further. We were eyeballing it but definitely could see an improvement. We'll see at our event in 2 weeks.

There is one in the beginning of the clip where they are not thrown a toy, but rather jump to grab a stationary bar-like thing and take it down with them. I was really surprised and wondered how they even teach that? I mean, how the heck to you get the dog to realize what you want them to do there?

Yep that is fetch-it and the unique thing with that at UAD is that they only move it out further horizontally versus some other organizations that do it vertically. Vertically is extremely dangerous in those pools because you only have a certain amount of depth before you hit bottom. Obviously the higher the dog jumps the deeper it is going to land in the pool. Tail fractures have occurred with the vertical system and that is why UAD refuses to use it.

Since Java tried Fetch-It for the first time last year I can explain! :D I also wondered how the heck we were going to have her realize where the toy was and what to do?! The arm can move along the pool so when teaching they move it right up to the dog and tip it down towards the dock, wiggling the toy in front of the dog. They let the dog grab the toy, you play with it, then have it put back on and move the arm out just a couple of feet out from the dock. Even in competing, they always wiggle the toy to initiate the prey drive. The dogs see it and locks on...runs at full speed and attempts to jump in the air to grab it. If they miss, the dog typically tries to put more power into the jump and is able to snatch it the next time.

And the toy is a foam dummy toy used for teaching dogs to retrieve. Its very soft and a lot of the dogs go nutso for it simply because of the squishy feel factor in their mouth. Like chewing gum. http://www.gundogsupply.com/dokken-double-rope-white-super-dummy.html

Fetch-It is good for teaching dogs who jump flat to jump UP and out. To properly place themselves when they push off the dock...some jump too early and lose a lot of distance. Jumping later with that last foot on the very edge of the dock will get them that toy!

That just looks like so much fun for the dogs. Thanks for sharing!

Oh yeah! I almost forgot to mention that this year will be the first year UAD is having it's big finals for the end of the year at Purina Farms in MO. They've grown substantially in the past few years enough that they've had to make qualifier events and move the finals to somewhere that could support the event and somewhere in the middle of the country for ease of travel. I saw that and immediately thought of you. I'm not sure Java will make it lol but maybe one day with a future dog (doberman:woot2:) we will get to see the beautiful grounds and maybe meet up!

HA! I was just reading about that and coming to post something about it when I saw you beat me to it.

Purina Farms is a really cool place and I think every dog lover should make an effort to see/experience it. And throw in a visit to the Museum Of the Dog...well worth the trip. I'll be keeping my :fingersx: that Java gets to come. I'd love to meet you both!

Ahhh, now that makes a lot of sense! Now I get it! ;) Thank you! Great explanation!

When I saw that I thought it would be so easy for Drake...no training necessary. Water and what would look like a tuggy to him, no brainer. Drake is all about water and a tuggy.

Lol I'm gonna try to find a place this summer for dock diving for Ares lol he'd be good at it the boy loves water and will jump in the pool no with no problem or hesitation. :)

My boy is forever leaping into the river down at the bottom of our village. He'd love this! The first time he 'fell' in he was only 4months old because the current was quite strong I wasn't sure how he'd cope so I ran a little further down the river bank and jumped in. Luckily, it was only just up past my knees. He was actually coping very well and going hell for leather with the doggy paddle lol

That'll be fun! I believe UAD is on the west coast right now. Seems they typically do events there and in the South during this time of the year since the summer will be hotter than heck out there.

UAD is in Long Beach today through the weekend with open spots: Ultimate Air Dogs - The World's Premier Dock Jumping Organization
Tell them this is your first event and they'll take good care of you! They are super nice and like family. You can either choose to jump and they'll use the time to teach or you can do practice jumps without competing.
