Ticks!

It's looking like it going to be the worst year ever for ticks. We are pulling many of them off the dogs every night, and its not even June yet. We have been trying all the natural remedies we can, but to no avail. So I guess we are going to have to poison our dogs with something that can deal with this. Sad!
I dislike having to give them a pill, or topical, to protect them, and us, of the ticks we have here, but I don't see any other way. The long term use of this kind of stuff cannot be good...what a quagmire.

Options?

We got off to an early start to the tick season too. There was still snow on the ground when Hans got his first one. Not sure what I'm going to do either...

Ticks are out in full force here too, except the last few days when it's been so cold.

We've never used a topical, but since they came out with the Nexgard chewables they're on that for the last 2 seasons. I like the option much better than something like Frontline.

We've been using Frontline but will be switching to Nexguard once it runs out. My biggest problem with the spot-on's is that they only work AFTER the tick has bitten! On the advice of my grandfather we started using Triazicide from Spectracide on the lawn. You spread the granules and water it in. Once the yard is dry it is safe for pets and kids to be on the grass. My grandpa has used it for many years with no complications so far. I found three ticks on the dogs in a single day last year so I treated the backyard. Not a single tick the rest of the year despite the woods surrounding our property and the huge variety of wildlife that passes through. We'll be applying it again, probably this weekend.

My neighbor uses Nexguard too and I thought she told me they have to bite first too?

The Nexgard repels them as well if I remember right. I did find 2 of them crawling on Albert a few days ago, but nothing has stuck since we started it. We've been pulling tons of them off ourselves so it must be repelling them.

We don't get a lot of ticks here in Rapid City, SD. We did however find a tick crawling on Kai already. I am sure we brought it back from Minnesota. I will mail the body back to you if someone in Minnesota will give me their address!

You can try a Seresto collar. They are a little pricey but quite effective. One of the vets I work for says it has worked the best for her dog with the ticks. One other draw back that she talked about was it getting off and lost when the they where out in the woods because they are expensive to replace. She said it was the only one she has used that she never saw a tick on her dog. Good luck!

After further research and consideration we have chosen to go with BRAVECTO 12 week flea and tick protection chew tabs. This product is a fairly new product on the market - made by MERCK - it is recommended and the only tab sold by my veterinarian. So we shall see...

Good to know. But we're only switching because our vet is dropping Frontline for Nexguard. I didn't really have a preference. But with a little one in the house soon it would be nice to not have to worry about the stuff on their fur.

I realize this thread is a year old but I found a tick on myself today. Never had one on me before so I kinda freaked out lol. Anyway Drogon is on Nexgard. Is there anything I should or can use for me?
Are those of you using Nexgard satisfied with it? Are there better options?
How does one check for ticks on a Dobe? Drogon's hair is so tight to his skin that it is difficult to ever see his skin. I try to basically pet him from tail to head and can kind of see some skin but for the most part I can't. Should I be relying on touch more than sight?
Would Drogon notice a tick and be annoyed by it crawling or biting him? - I guess I'm asking if I could tell by his behavior. I didn't feel the tick crawl or bite me. I found it by touch - it was on my abs.
I use some essential oil blend on both of use to help ward off mosquitoes. It does a pretty good job. Would it have any effect on repelling ticks? I haven't been using it yet this year.
Sorry for all the questions but like I mentioned I freaked out

Wow that would have freaked me out too !!! I really like vectra. My next one I'm going to move my dogs to is trifecis I think that's what it's called. I actually ordered those repellent packs that adhere to the under side of the idc harnesses for all my dogs so they have extra protection from euro dog design. Lol darn it drogon lol now you have me itching hahaha
Oh and how I check is by feel and and flag light. I check the feet in the pad and toes first, then I check the under arms of him and under thighs, then check the ears, after then a full body rub down and flash light check, I also make sure to check the lips and jowl area and inside his lips. They like the warm areas.
