Is a Doberman Pinscher right for you?

Can I get an amen! My b/f has a mastiff and he thinks Gretchen is spastic! I think she's fun and funny and a great companion to take on walks and short hikes (hopefully runs and 14ers when she's older). She's also an amazing cuddle buddy!

I have only gotten my first doberpupp a week ago but I can tell you right now that I will never get a different breed. Dobie is the perfect breed for me. Such an elegant, intelligent and loving creature.

Well for us, this is our take on it.. If we would have been younger, much much easier to handle..(like we're old) hahahaha
Kato now almost full grown has become the love of our lives and we cannot see ourselves without our big boy. He weighs 86 lbs now, is European and still hard headed lol... well a little.
Would we go though this again..(hmmm not with a puppy) but we are thinking of getting an American red female that is at least over a year old, maybe from a shelter or something.. Yep we have fallen in love with the breed and my hubby finds the American Reds beautiful..I believe they are not as hard headed as a European also.. is this so? That's all folks..hahaha

I always tell people that your second Doberman pup is a piece of cake after you have some experience with them and know what to expect. I believe both Americans and female pups make it easier yet, but I'm sure that's not 100% the case.

Velcro's great until you're on your laptop and they want attention. "You won't pet me well then how do you like my nose in your way? Still no attention well looky I can use it to type too. You think a few pats on the head should be appeasing enough to me??? Well how about I take my paw and shut the computer and jump in your lap is that a good enough sign of you?"

This is my husband Bryan's velcro dog Stryker! I don't think Bryan has sat alone in years!

My Brother had a Dobe and I loved that dog..That was 26 years ago and 9 months ago we got Buster. He was a handful at 8 weeks and is still a handful at 11 months..but he has my heart. I have never loved an animal as much as I love this dog..in fact I have family members I love and trust less. He is sweet, funny, loving, protective and more intelligent then most people I know. He is also stubborn and goofy. I adore this dog...He is the right fit for me and my family...

This breed is so endearing and while Buster is larger then the average Doberman..he has fit comfortably in my heart.

Welcome Terra! I think you'll agree with us when we say that once you have a Doberman you'll never go back. We'd love to see photos of Buster!

Oh i agree after your first you know what to expect . This will be my fourth im getting a red boy this july 2015 .. Love them so much i had to own one of each color. Love all the colors but fawns make me melt..

People can tell you over and over what to expect. The truth is you will never understand what a different breed they are until you own one. Even as a 12 week old puppy I can tell Kai is different, special, loving, fun, and trouble. We have had her 2 1/2 weeks and would exchange her for any other dog or breed.

Would? Or wouldn't? I can say I'm not a fan of owning a dobie puppy, although I like seeing pix and visiting with them. They are very strong willed but also very smart and very loving. Probably from the months of 4-8, I seconded guessed my decision a lot! Like when they look at you and do something they KNOW they're not supposed to but do it anyways!!! Ugh! How frustrating! Now people laugh when I say I have the perfect dog but I think I do, sure she still sometimes counter surfs and jumps on the bed and couch but, meh, I'm ok with that.

Also, and maybe this is just me, I found it hard to remember she's just a puppy because I think dobies take on the look of the adults much quicker than other breeds.

That is the most common age the cute little pups, now teenagers wind up in rescues, shelters or worse, but if people just put in a little effort and get through that teenage stage they realize what a wonderful breed it is. I'm not speaking of you since I know you're doing a great job, but we see countless stories here about how someone is going to give up on them and rehome at this stage.

My Buster is now 1 year 1 month and 5 days old...we got him when he was 8 weeks and by the time he was 9 weeks I was in love..and by the time he was 12 weeks I figured I had made a huge mistake, we had a stubborn and huge dog and I loved him and could not get rid of him for anything.
He is now the love of our lives and if we were younger would get another Dobe pup right now. But this one is a hand full and two of him would be too much of a great thing.

Isn't that exactly how it is??? Is love, questioning your decision, and then best dog ever! Funny, because I never felt that way about any other breed.

I agree...I have always had a dog, and I have loved them of course, but not like Buster. Dobe's are just so unique. We caught him trying to turn the door knob with his mouth the other day. Not a smarter more observant dog anywhere.

I have a major issue with people that get dogs without researching the breed and then turn around and want to get rid of the dog. I am happy for the people it works out for but it is just sad for the dogs it doesn't. Knowing this I made sure my husband knew what he (I already knew from my dad's dobies) was getting into. After Joker my husband was hooked and I think from now till they day we die we will always choose the dobermans....

We got a Doberman after i researched. I would not have any other dog. He is great..we have little dogs, cats , chickens and horses. Buster swims in the pond and plays with the horses..though the little dog we have terrorizes him. Buster is social and funny..and sometimes too smart for us.
