It's a Dobie thing!

My dobies have never been able to swim like a normal dog. Is this common behaviour? Their chests float up and they splash their front legs around like a drowning person- or are mine just uncoordinated mindas?

They all bring toys to us to either drop in our laps (chest if we're laying down), or to have us hold when they chew them or to just chew on as they lay their head in our laps.

Oh it's a dobie thing!! Denali will have me hold his bully sticks while he chews them.

Or if I'm sitting on the floor he must straddle me(his face is at my feet) he will then drop whatever he's chewing on next to my feet so he can nibble my toes. As if I wasn't going to notice.

Now this is gross but I wonder if it's just him. Heaven forbid someone passes gas around him. He will attempt to shove his nose in your butt!!!

Oh yes, that's a Dobie thing. They can get better at swimming though. It's funny to see them first enter the water. They start this embarrassing flailing of front legs while they are still able to stand.

My Dobes have been good at retrieving out of the water. Once they really hit their stride swimming toward something they level out and swim like a reasonable animal.

Jax parades around with a toy in his mouth when he wants attention, but not because he wants you to actually touch it and play with him. No, just look at it and pet him is all he wants.

And Jax was totally embarrassing in water the first time. It was traumatic for us more than him. Lol he wasn't real comfortable swimming, even though he was doing pretty well, so when he got in a deep section of the creek and someone forced me close to him on accident, he climbed my back! Lol I carried all of his 95 lbs until I could get to a section of the creek I knew he could stand in. He spent the remainder of our visit in hubby's lap who had his chair sitting in the creek...

I don't know of this is a Dobe thing or just a Rex thing but does anyone else think their dog is part goat? Rex loves to try and climb and jump on everything! He has climbed on stuff none of my other dogs had ever thought of climbing. He also thinks all parts of the couch are for sitting and laying on, not just the seat part which was never and issue with my Ridgebacks or my German Shepherd.

Jax isn't part goat but he is part cat! His favorite spot on the couch is along the back of the couch just like a cat. Goofy boy!

Ohmygawds yes about the swimming., My last rescue tried to climb me the first time I took her in water and I still to this day think she was trying to stand on the bottom on her back feet and just splash, as others have mentioned.

What about the 700lb doberman head? ( my mothers name for this phenomenon ) All of mine seem to have had it. They lay their head in your lap and all their weight transfers. I think they have the ability to add mine in as well!

Does anyone else have a dobie who 'purrs'??! Bit like a quiet growl, it was a sure sign of complete relaxation and contentment when z curled up on my bed at night :)

I honestly believe that Hans would drown if he fell into water where he couldn't touch bottom. He's 6 now and has never swam a stroke. I had to rescue him from a sinking dock one time. The dock looked safe to him, but it was just barely floating. His weight sank the dock and he jumped off into the water. The shore was only about 10 feet away, but he clung to the dock for dear life and had no concept of swimming to shore. He wouldn't let go, so I had to get soaked getting out on the dock too in order to pull him out.

Dobermans have some odd behavior. I thought it was just my loony dog Buster. I have not had a clean kitchen floor since we got him, what with the dribbling water and does anyone else's dog use their water bowl as a foot bath? He also will Goose you..but only usually when he has a squeaky toy..I swear he thinks it is funny to hear us squeak. We get puppy porn when Buster sleeps..
They are the best dogs in the world...

We have a small pond and Buster will just take a running jump and cannonball into it. In the summer if he can not get to the pond he will jump into the horse trough. He will chase the water hose so that its impossible to water the flowers. He can swim rather well..he has a couple pits for friends and the three of them and his Ridgeback pal love the pond.

Yup, Greta and Drake do. I swear sometimes Greta really thinks she is a cat. She really has the purr thing down. She even rubs on you an arches her back like a cat.

Really must get my pup around some water. I SO miss living right next to Puget Sound. I have this theory that salt water helps control fleas. Always felt good to think that anyway. The amazing thing is there was really no flea problem in that region. I bet that, like all things, will change for the worse. I know heartworm is expanding its reach across the country.

At any rate, the best thing we have here is a tributary to the Ohio River. I just look at that muddy water and wonder if it's at all safe to let a dog go in it. Anyone got any idea as to whether it would be safe? I'm thinking parasites and such.

This is too funny to read. Makes me wonder if our supposed GSD/Dal mix had some Dobe. We have often commented how much Luther reminds us of her in many of these quirky ways. We used to laugh at her "heavy head syndrome". She never liked to play fetch, but she loved to carry a toy around in an "admire me now" sort of way. :) And the flop over for a belly rub. :) Oh and her foot always had to be somewhere on you if you were petting her.

Luther does what we call the Dobiemelt. When you settle in for a good all over body rub he just sorta slowly melts from a sit to a mess of dog puddle on the floor. And the Dobiestare. And he is king at being in your space and in the way when trying to do something--especially when putting on socks or shoes. And the lean. (Tia leaned too). Luther collects things to his bed. He rarely chews anything, but he will collect socks, the little dogs' small blankets, our son's soft toys, and especially DH's shoes. Oh! And the ground pound!! And the nose touch. We walk around with our hands at shoulder level when we walk by him if we don't want to be cold nosed. Ha

We do have a blanket sucker, but that's our little Rommel Min Pin mix.

lol! We've had to buy our dogs life jackets with the handles on the back, so glad it wasnt just mine....

We bought some like that, too. River is braver than she should be and I didn't want to have to go in after her.

Always a good idea especially if you spend any time around a river. Dogs don't know not to fight the current. A dog life jacket could save both of your lives. Drake, Gigi and Greta have all been taught "get wet" so they don't get In the water unless we know it. Gigi lives on the Missouri river which is a huge, fast river with lots of under currents so she has been taught to only go in the creeks leading to the river around her house.
But if your dog really loves water, you can always build them a pond. Drake is really happy we built one for him.

Oh yes! The staring from close range as you try to accomplish something is one that I definitely feel.

The nose bump: With my last Dobie I developed a habit of placing my hand down to form a shield of over rather sensitive area when I would walk by him. I found myself doing it in public as well. Of course I knew that it was probably backfiring in that it was training him to poke that area. Just yesterday I tried walking by my current pup without the shield. Sure enough, not the poke, but a gratuitous sniff. It's like: Um no.
