Symptoms of Bloat and how to notice it in your best friend......

Thank you for sharing this information SJ. The one thing that concerns and confuses me is the following:

Causes
According to the links below, it is thought that the following may be the primary contributors to bloat. . . .

Eating habits, especially...

Elevated food bowls

I consistently use an elevated food bowl with Pippi - not only because I've read that it prevents bloat, but because when I first got her, I could hear her gulping a lot of air whenever she ate or drank from bowls on the floor. When I elevated her bowls she seemed to be more comfortable, and I didn't hear that air gulping when she would eat or drink. She was also extremely gassy when she ate from bowls on the floor. While she still has gas, it's not all day every day when she eats and drinks from elevated bowls.

What do others think? I'm thoroughly confused now!

We've had discussion on elevating/not elevating bowls and it seems confusing to me too!

I used to feed elevated when I first got Dobermans, but not because of bloat. Like Marco I had not even heard of it for years! And when I finally did, I didn't know that Dobes were prone to it. I thought it was mostly Danes. But someone gave me the dish set for a gift and I used it.

Then for some reason I started putting the food on the floor......and I kept the water in the raised dish. Then I got Kali and wanted to keep the water down so they both can drink.......so now it's all on the floor. I still don't know which is better!

I myself feed from an elevated feed bowl for Bella, I think it is more the speed the dog eats, Bella eats very slow, mostly licks the food up rather than gobble it down, she loves her elevated bowls, I have tried putting it on the floor for her and she ends up laying down to eat, Buddy eats from a dish on the floor but like Bella he eats slowly thank goodness.

The people I have talked to that have had dogs with bloat all say the first thing they noticed was them trying to be sick but not bringing anything up , so if you see this move quickly.

That scares me more than the height of the dish......Buddy is way too fast. I take it away sometime just to slow him down. :nono:

Just been watching this on u-tube it might help slow Buddy dog,

This is worrying me now. Other day Zeus was heaving in the garden, he was at it for about 20 minutes, I thought he may of ate something he shouldnt and was trying to fetch it up!?!:eek:
He was not himself either, very very quiet.
He is fine now, back to his normal self.
I best get some of that windeze stuff just incase.
