My dogs loved the raw diet. I quit feeding it , though, because of Hope. She got sick & the doc couldn't DEFINITIVELY say that it was not partially to blame (salmonella). She became deathly ill the day after her 4th raw meal.
More than likey it was hidden kidney disease caused by parvo.Feeding whole raw meat to her probably pushed her over the edge &the blood levels went out of whack to the point that nothing could save her.
I still WANT to feed raw, but after that & the ensuing bill-$2800 for hospitalizations, Xrays for blockages, expert consultations, blood works, unrinalysis, 6 prescriptions, etc .- I just can't do it. My husband is 100% dead set against it. It'd be money well spent & worth every penny of she were still alive...but with her gone it is a VERY bitter pill to swallow each month. A hard reminder that I may not have done the best thing for my beloved baby girl. I am NOT against raw feeding, but perhaps people should have a vet check & blood work done beforehand. Just like people are supposed to discuss diet changes with their docs. I never saw WHY before...but sure do now!!!!! There may be something hidden going on & that change can become a disaster. I am not trying to scare anyone. I just want to make suggestions. I lost my Hope, I don't want anyone else to suffer as I am.
So- I now cook for my dogs. I do grains, veggies, and sear(rare)beef hearts, chicken livers, and ground hambrg & chicken or pork.
I do give beef rib bones with meat as treats...the dogs LOVE this.
It at least allows me to control what they are eating & I know everything was purchased & prepared fresh & was human grade.
I've said it before...if you want to cook for, or feed your dogs raw.....GO TO ASIAN markets. it's a raw feeders paradise!! Cheap prices, human grade meats, and unusual bits. PERFECT! Oh, farmers markets & fruit stands rock in the summertime too.
Happy shopping.
