How to Make Dog Food at Home

I couldn't get the first two videos, but the third one lost me after the first few words. Actually it was the word "patties" that made me click pause. While I agree that a raw diet is better than kibble, I do not see the point of feeding a raw diet if the dog is going to have everything pre-chewed (ground) for it. The largest benefit I see to feeding a raw diet is the dental benefits a dog gets by eating whole prey bones and all. Chewing up whole chicken parts cleans a dog's teeth like they were meant to be cleaned.

Check out this link and pay special attention to chapter 7: http://www.ukrmb.co.uk/images/ww.pdf

if you click on the video it self the link to video should pop up, and the grinding video will help people go over to barf who are scared of the bones even thou uncooked bones cause no harm

I have made some homemade dog treats before-The show Groomer Has It- inspired me when I watched it one night-it was one of their challenges they had to do.

I saw that episode too. Did you know a brand new season of Groomer Has It starts April 11? I loved that show *blush* For treats, I just either cut up leftover meat or even cook meat that was on sale especially for my dog's training sessions.

Yes, you are completely correct. I started out grinding when I switched to raw because I was scared stiff of feeding bones to my dog. After 40+ years of hearing how deadly bones are and having many scary times pulling chicken bones out of cats' throats, it was hard to give her that first chicken leg quarter. I will go back and look the videos over. Thanks.

My dogs loved the raw diet. I quit feeding it , though, because of Hope. She got sick & the doc couldn't DEFINITIVELY say that it was not partially to blame (salmonella). She became deathly ill the day after her 4th raw meal.
More than likey it was hidden kidney disease caused by parvo.Feeding whole raw meat to her probably pushed her over the edge &the blood levels went out of whack to the point that nothing could save her.
I still WANT to feed raw, but after that & the ensuing bill-$2800 for hospitalizations, Xrays for blockages, expert consultations, blood works, unrinalysis, 6 prescriptions, etc .- I just can't do it. My husband is 100% dead set against it. It'd be money well spent & worth every penny of she were still alive...but with her gone it is a VERY bitter pill to swallow each month. A hard reminder that I may not have done the best thing for my beloved baby girl. I am NOT against raw feeding, but perhaps people should have a vet check & blood work done beforehand. Just like people are supposed to discuss diet changes with their docs. I never saw WHY before...but sure do now!!!!! There may be something hidden going on & that change can become a disaster. I am not trying to scare anyone. I just want to make suggestions. I lost my Hope, I don't want anyone else to suffer as I am.

So- I now cook for my dogs. I do grains, veggies, and sear(rare)beef hearts, chicken livers, and ground hambrg & chicken or pork.
I do give beef rib bones with meat as treats...the dogs LOVE this.
It at least allows me to control what they are eating & I know everything was purchased & prepared fresh & was human grade.
I've said it before...if you want to cook for, or feed your dogs raw.....GO TO ASIAN markets. it's a raw feeders paradise!! Cheap prices, human grade meats, and unusual bits. PERFECT! Oh, farmers markets & fruit stands rock in the summertime too.
Happy shopping.

I recently took my dog off the raw diet I was feeding her because it was becoming too expensive and time consuming for me. Since I live in a very rural area, my options are limited for bargain shopping. My dog was doing very well on the raw prey model diet and since I quit, I've already noticed a change in her coat and skin. I'm now feeding Canidae ALS but think I will start supplementing with salmon oil and vitamin E like i was on raw.

It's about an hour and a half to the closest wholesale market and who knows how far to an Asian market for me. Maybe three hours? Plus I do not have a large enough freezer to make buying in bulk very practical. I thought about buying through a restaurant supplier that makes frequent deliveries to my area, but still had the freezer space problem.

yea if your gonna feed raw your gonna need a small extra freezer

How right you are! I was lucky enough to have everything else like a meat grinder, poultry shears, food processor, food weight scale, great knives, knife sharpener, stainless steel bowls... Gosh it takes a lot of equipment to feed raw! But the key item I didn't have was an extra freezer. That was the only thing that messed me up.
