When will my Dobe boy start to fill out ?

Hope this isn't a dumb question but here goes anyway. My Tiki is just barely 1 year old. He has grown magnificently and I know he is of good health. He is about 29" tall and 85-90 Lbs. I know he is not going to get much taller but I was wondering if he will fill out and get a thicker look. His neck and upper legs are thin. I see so many Dobes that just look so much thicker in the neck and have a much broader chest and thicker thighs. Just wondering if anyone could give me a possible time frame for him filling out. :bag:

At one year of age, he is still very much a pup. Depending on the line of course, but generally speaking most, males especially, tend to bulk up about 18 months to 24 months...and of course, mental maturity follows thereafter...sometimes a little slower...like around 3 years of age. Again, that timeline will depend heavily on the lines of your pup. That is why, on a side note, some people opt to wait until 18 to 24 months to have them spayed or neutered, so they will reach thier weight/girth potential.

He just turned 1 last week so plenty of time. He has grown tremendously and he is tall and has good definition just was wondering when and if he will get that thick neck and broad chest that I see in so many Euro bred dogs. Either way I am so happy with my boy and proud of him no matter what. I definately lucked out with him. He is beautiful and very easy to train. He is all I had hoped for and more. Thanks for answering to my post. :)

Hmmm not sure. Personally I would think it would depend on the dog. Lexi is over 2 now and I dont really notice her filling out too much ( at least not as much as I thought she would ). But when I stare at her every day, I dont notice changes as much. I suppose if I took pics and compared them, I would see a change.

Dont worry, he will be a nice "fat" happy Dobe before you know it !

My male doberman came to me, as a rescue, when he was 14 months old, and he was all legs. He turned 3 in Dec. and is really starting to bulk up. I just thought he would stay thin and leggy, but his bulking is very noticeable now. He is now developing the chesty chest and bulking up in the muscles. I am guessing the bulking would be dependent on his breeding and his age. My male came in at 29" and is still that height (at the shoulders), he weighed 91lbs. and now weighs 97lbs. and has been 97lbs. for the past year, so I can be pretty sure his bulking up now has nothing to do with his weight, but age and physical maturity.

In my experience with Male Dobies and Neapolitan mastiff's and Rotties, is that they do not really fully fill out till they are around 24-36 months... they are slow to fill out usually! Now I do not know how old Buddy is but Nupe can tell you.. that Buddy has FILLED OUT.. he is a BEEF CAKE-STUD MUFFIN... :) but
Usually... males are around late 2 to mid 3 when they really look like a mature adult male!
so enjoy the puppy stage Patrolman... they grow up so freakin fast!! and he is still lanky because he is an adolescent and will be for at least another year! :dontpanic: It will happen!

Thanks ya saved me the trouble. :p
This age is what I kid and call the pencil butt stage !!! Don't you worry one day you will wake up and go :wow:The doberboy will be gone and the doberMan has arrived!!! :D

Like I said in another thread be thankful he has not matured & filled out quick. Because a lot of dobes that fill out and mature very young tend to fall apart just as quick(not always but it does happen). My boy did not fill out until he was about 2 1/2 to 3, he is now 6 1/2 and sorry to toot my own horn but I think he looks fantastic!!!:)

So take what you need of this and leave the rest because after all it is just my :2cents.

:lmao:

I agree, Boris filled out until he was at least 3 and it was just in the past year that I was amazed at how big his chest had gotten, which was something I never expected after a certain age.

Dobermans are not considered mature til two. And theret would also is some variance depending on lines. So some start to mature and fill iout at about 2 while some lines don't mature and fill out til 3 or 4. I would check with the breeder when the parents matured and I would ask for some pictures at different ages to compare. It should give you an idea. It would also help if you could see grandparents on both sides.

Our old boy stopped filling out when he was just over 3 years old. He was a very big dobie. top end of the uk breed standard. Not bad saying he was the runt on the litter. Also if you keep his family jewels will help him bulk out. I find dogs that get castrated before they have "filled out" dont get as big as ones who kept them. Our old boys brother had his taken at 4 months and he never did fill out he was ment too. You wouldnt believe he was the same breeding as his brothers and sisters he was totally different. He just remained "puppy like" in looks

Not a dumb question at all ! I'm glad you asked because I was a bit curious. I've done some research the past month and the answer's above all seem to be consistant with what other's say. They usually say don't nueter until 18 months or therefor later. Funny since I just cancelled his procedure yesterday after doing yet again more research. Luckily I'm responsible enough to keep him away from other's so that no unnecessary puppies are made...... Plus were in such a remote area I don't have to worry about him roaming to the neighbors right next store, so it's in our best interest to wait.

Justice is just now 10 months and I haven't seen a ton of growth over the last month. He measure's 29 " at the wither's if I get a really good accurate read ( He likes to move around ). His last weight ( 1 week ago ) was 84 lbs so I'm pretty much thinking he's done growing. I could be wrong though ?

He is very much skinny in the chest and legs though. I would like to see him fill out properly and again most point to keeping him in-tact to get the proper muscle content from the hormones.

I am so glad I have found this forum and this discussion in particular. We became a first time Dober owners almost 14 months ago when we became the proud parens of a 12 week old dog. Initially bought for a pet, there were no thoughts of showing him until we had strangers wanting to take photo's of him in parking lots. I did some genealogy research on my dog, and after realising he had some rather nice Euro and American bloodlines, as well as a positive evaluation from our breeder, my husband and I decided to start showing him in AKC conformation shows. We have done our first 3 shows in the Novice category in which we got a 1st place each time which now means he has to be entered in his age group category (12-18 mo's) .... He however is "wanting" in the chest department, as I have noticed that most of the dogs that are entered in his age group are well rounded and look well matured in stature than he does. My husband is really worried that he won't fill out in his chest and I was rather wondering whether there are any exercises or activities I can introduce to assist with chest development - his measurements are 28 X 28, 83lbs, he has a great topline, regally long neck and great head .... as I said, its just the chest at this point .... I loved the descrption - pencil butt - because that really does describe my dog to a T ....

Cathy, you might start a new thread with photos of your boy so folks can see exactly what you're dealing with. If you start a fresh thread you're more likely to get replies and the info you're seeking.

Sure .... will do, as I'd really like some input from all you experienced Dober owners ..... I come from a terrier background - White English Bull terriers and Airedales .... so I am on totally new territory now!!!

OK stupid question, but if 29" and 90 lbs, 31", 29" and 97 lbs, 29" and 84lbs, 28" and 83 lbs, are all considered appropriate sizes for male Dobes, then why is 30" and 115 lbs considered oversized? (Thats a pretty chubby 115lbs BTW)
