Poor guy.
He’s feeling his age a bit.
He kept up with the younger bitches all week and he’s paying for it now.

His rear end is a bit heavy getting up, I can tell he’s sore.

Day two out there playing with Tesa the Rottie he had a brief episide of a rear leg bothering him. He dropped and started chewing his rear right paw then went to the elbo.
My mom was there the first couple of days and it was apparent to all of us immediately.
Aunt Joy (Tesa’s Human) seemed to have the best touch for him and luckily a pretty savy dog gal, we rotated his leg through its motions while he let her feel through his pads for stickers or other matter.
The way he kept extending it, and the way he seemed to get up a minute later with no limp, or hitch in his get along suggested to us a cramp.

I had nasty visions for a second of a twisted ankle, torn tendon, etc, and thinking getting quality vet from where we were, meant a trip to Yuma.

Fortunately it did seem to be a cramp. Understandable considering the soft sand is harder to walk and run than hard ground.

We’ve been home since Friday evening, he’s still sore getting up.

He seems a bit mopey too.
I wonder if he’s depressed his new found girlfriend is already gone and lives over a 1000 miles away?

That brings me to my next post..
The only dog quandary.
I’d often wondered if maybe Rocky was ok being the only dog of the family. He gets all the attention, all the treats, all the love, no competition.
After seeing him this weekend I’m almost in tears we haven’t worked harder at finding him a companion.

I’ll always love the Doberman breed, and will most likely always have one if I have means to.
My wife flat fell in love with the chocolate lab last week.
She won over Rocky faster than any other I’ve seen.
She was truly amazing like that.
She would not take him being an Asshole.

Upon meeting Rocky was instantly at a dislike. This dog came out of nowhere in the darkness, met her old pal Tesa and tried to meet Rocky, who growled, snapped, whined, wiggled, and growled more. Tried to pull my arm from its socket.

I put him in a down and squatted next to him to make sure he held it.
This lab, laying on her side, wiggled right between my legs up to Rocky’s face and started licking him, his face, his mouth:D

After that, I let him up, he smelled her rear end, she did something that would be considered pornographic had humans done it, and that was that.

:dobe:She’s Great!!!:D:love:

@Doberman Gang ?
For sore muscles/over exercise is the best coarse of action no more action for a while?
Light duty?
He has desire to get the ball, go kill the squirrel, etc, but I can tell he’s sore getting up.
No limp.
We got home Friday evening.

Very interesting question.

Rubie without a doubt was 100% content being an only dog. She's also 100% content having Moo around.

I think it was smart of us to wait until Rubie was older and then bringing Moo home as a puppy because she can be intolerant of certain dogs. She was able to tell Moo was was allowed and not allowed from the get go.

Before we got Moo, Rubie would enjoy the company of my family's dogs when we'd visit but she was always happy to come home and get back to her single routine.

What I'm NOT looking forward to is when we are left with just one dog as it'll be very hard on the other because this is what they know. Dogs can't pine for what they don't know so I don't think you should feel bad in any way that Rocky has been an only dog. He's got you and that's what's most important!

EDIT: sorry he's feeling sore. I'm sure it was just a very exciting weekend and it was hard for him to restrain himself!

He’s had both.
We had a Daisy.
Then he was a single dog.
It took some adjusting on all our part but he’s seemed content and happy with the schedule.
Seeing him last week makes me think he needs more.

Perhaps I’m putting too much human emotional thought into the dog world too, lol.

@Gelcoater

Yes on the light duty.

Try making the Turmeric Paste. Or
This is what we use for our 9yr old.
Helps with any inflammation. Started to give him this a couple of years ago when he had a neck issue.
We do 1 soft gel per day.
Amazon $12.40 for Qty 90 or $28.92 for Qty 200

I honestly think it would do him good to have his own girl in the house. It's probably different with someone else's dog or pup but when they have a pup who was introduced and grew up with him, I'm sure they'd be quick companions.

How old is he now?

Seven and a halfish?
We brought him home in the last days of 2013 at a year and a halfish years old.

If it is noticeable in movement then I would say rest, I also give supplements but they get them every meal regardless. Some times they just need a few days of down time. So we just got back from The National Championship so will probably only train tracking until Thursday then may be a light session of obedience and protection until the weekend. Just a short break and recovery time.

@Gelcoater do you know how to do massages? Mine will get one several times a week, but especially after a day of hard training and after extreme activity. I think the pool really helps as well. By the time I finish a message on them, they are relaxed and in the mellow zone. Funny, now that I think about it, it makes me mellow too. :D

No?
Do tell.

I’m interested.

And, this afternoon/evening he does look a little more loose.
He was interested in ball and mouthy about it.
I gave him a few tosses mostly up and not out, to keep his running minimum.

Boy, interesting question, Gel.

I wish I could give some good advice on getting a buddy for Rocky vs. not doing so.

I've always been such a control freak with my Dobe and all about furthering their training through everyday life. I want him to be all about me. :D Even with Oji (thoughts of achieving anything with his training are long gone) I don't want to add to the chaos and the silly hyperactive behavior. Yeah. Control freak. I don't even want him running around in the backyard because it destroys the grass in a big hurry.

So I think your situation might be so different from mine that I can't offer an opinion.

I can see having only one dog and being able to spoil just the one. However, I have to say our rescue pit/chow/lab/xxx has about one bad health condition from every breed and he was on the steady decline for some time. We just kept him comfortable and spoiled the hell out of him whenever we could! But since having Zeus he has come back to life and chasing balls again. He even wrestles with Zeus every so often now too.

It's amazing to see the puppy come back to life!!!

I will research that for you. When I was in Tech school the study of anatomy and physiology in domestic animals led me to taking the courses for animal massage therapy. I started with equine massage since I had competition horses, then I applied that study to dogs and cats. It works for anxious animals as well. I started implementing it with Bacall when she started showing signs of anxiety with fireworks and thunderstorms. It helps reduce her anxiety and I am finding it has helped with other sudden loud noises. She will now come to me and lay down to get her massage if she becomes anxious, which to me is tremendous progress. It eliminates the need for drugs to control anxiety.
Both Bogie and Bacall love their massage days and their recovery from strenuous physical activity is shortened by using massage therapy. It also creates a closer bond with your pet.
