Went to the vet today, Rollo will be 5m next week, he got weighed and the vet said that's impossible, so they recalibrated and weighed him a second time. 63.1 pounds. So asked the vet if she thought he was getting chonky and she said yes. I guess the all you can eat buffet is over...poor little dude.
Handsome! Really neat to see how fast a dobe in the wild can muscle up just naturally with great exercise and chow.
Have you got a pedigree by registration, or by DNA that shows the breeder line/geographic area of origin?
How big was Rollo's sire?
What do you feed?
I recall you saying Rollo sourced his own salmon by robbing an eagle of its kill...
And being in the ABC Island group, I'm guessing Chewy wont deliver to the doorstep...

Gotta slim Bonnie down some as she's gotten a bit chubby my bad due to extra heat and humidity here, so we've avoided the hottest part of the day.

I do have his pedigree, however, since the breeder chooses not to publicly disclose their pedigrees I am inclined to respect that and not post his pedigree in a public forum.
All origin goes back to Germany, so I don't think that's what you mean. He has South American, American, and European on top, and American and European on the bottom. I'd say the most influential (phenotype) comes from his grand dam, and her euro lines, her sire is Pride of Russia Altay. Not sure what Rollo's sire weighs, the breeder did say that Rollo should mature to 100+.
Note: with all the finger pointing at Pride of Russia kennel, and the hate for Sidor specifically as if he were the cause of DCM in the breed, I'll just say, yes, he has Sidor in his pedigree more than once and leave it at that.
Currently, dogs get blueberries, sea lettuce, fish, eggs, chicken, venison, beef, beef heart, and beef liver twice daily, plus Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 available at will.

Where do you have to go to see a Vet? I've a friend in Cordova, no Vets there, they have to fly to Anchorage. Makes it really rough if you've a pet emergency. Is there a traveling Vet that visits your island?

We have a vet nearby, it's a 15 minute boat ride and 15 minute car ride from where we dock, so not that bad. Just general veterinary care though, nothing fancy. If we needed cardiologist or something more specialized we would have to fly to Seattle, WA. We have a vet tech friend though that has made house calls for us out on our island. Living in Alaska you do have to accept that lack of medical care for emergencies are an acceptable risk, whether human or animals.
Oh they are cute together! That boy looks especially happy!

No wonder Rollo is "built like a brick s---house"!
Personally I like the idea of cutting back on kibble as the first thing to drop calories,
IF feeding raw/whole is working good.
PPS seems to be the go-to of what I read, in general, amongst top three names or so mentioned in dobe forums.

Bonnie has two Altobello and one Pride of Russia in the pile of mostly pet names in her Embark "Relative Finder"
And those are at the "cousins" lower percentage, which is not indicative of exactly where in actual line diagram, just the Embark formula on close enough dna match to mention. There may be more, as one can only see what the user chooses to share, using Relative Finder.
So one "might" infer higher possibility of DCM, in any dog with eastern europe dna but thats still a crap shoot, statistically, and there are plenty of good lines, proven doing the job on the working side, arguably less inbred than confo in US some say.
Anyway, not a breeder just a layman so thats only my $0.02 and YMMV
So we feed healthy and watch out for whatever the latest thinking is in food caused DCM: avoid "pulses" in the kibble formula, iirc.
And do holters and echos. So far so good.

This is really fascinating to me. Do you dock on the island right at home? Do you own a car on the island? On the place you take the boat to? I would read an entire thread about island life, and it's logistics, and all of it, if you would be willing to write one.
Frequent boat rides seem really cool, but then I remember that there are days when the seas aren't kind.
Looks like Rollo is well accustomed to the seas. Has he been in the air yet?
Of course the emergency medical care for animals in most states in the US has gotten horrible too with the big corporate buyouts in the industry. The after hours emergency vet they try to pawn us off on is 1.5 hours away and I refuse to go to them after all of the horror stories.
One of Olive shortly before she came to us 3 years ago.

She was a little meek at first her usual. Then she kept running to him then away lol. He would chase and yes he was very happy to sniff… he’s a sweet guy much bigger than her, but a gentleman.

We live on a remote island, only accessible by boat or float plane. There are no roads, cars, ect. It's just wilderness. We built inside the treeline, and originally only had a mooring buoy for the first 6 years, have since added a dock. We have vehicles in town, and a business and shop, and we are currently building a place in town for a winter home as the winter is extremely rough and the winter seas are extremely dangerous to traverse.
The only picture I have of our house from the water.
You can see our mooring buoy here, we would have to beach on these rocks to load and unload.
We built our pier over the top of those rocks
This happens a lot in winter, making things extremely more difficult
We do get the wildlife channel here, so that's the upside

I don't think the science shows higher prevalence of DCM in Eastern European, might have earlier onset, but the breed is looking at 60%, whether American or European.
There is a lot of linebreeding in the breed. My boys pedigree on the American and South American is chock full of Lex Luther, Cactus Cash, Cryptonite and his other 3/4 working line,
this one dog has so much genetic influence he might as well be his sire and i have no idea of the lifespan and health of that ancestry. Not much diversity on paper, will have to have a look at a DNA profile.
