Pneumonia

Jasper is in the ICU for pneumonia/possible secondary drowning.

We took him for a swim this morning, like we do every year in the summer. He was swimming really well and we didn’t stay at the beach long. He was full of energy and had a blast. Swimming is his favorite activity.

We got home and he was clearly uncomfortable. I actually thought it was bloat. He wouldn’t settle, his belly was a bit large, he was breathing hard and stood stretched out. We took him to the vet.

X-rays showed a large amount of water in his lungs. White blood cells low, but organ function was ok.

I never thought this would happen. He swims a lot. He only had one instance at the beach where he coughed up some water. But then after a break, he was back up and going.

They are keeping him for a couple of days. Hooked up to oxygen and IV antibiotics. Im devastated. He needs prayers. The vet said his xrays were severe.

We will be praying for Jasper and you and your family. Try to keep good thoughts. He is being cared for and he knows he is loved. Hopefully he will beat this, stay strong.

Thank you,

Crazy I was just reading your thread too. Oh my goodness. My prayers go right back to you and your baby. Its extremely difficult not having them home. As soon as we walked in the house and Jasper wasn’t there I just broke down.

I will keep you and Jasper in my heart & prayers. I didn't know this was even a thing! I guess he inhaled water? I'll keep you & Jasper wrapped in healing thoughts, please keep us posted.

Oh Jasper... Sending good thoughts your way!! Please let us know how he is doing when you can!

They emailed me late last night. Here is what the vet said.

I won’t lie when I read “if he continues to hang in there,” I lost it. I just can’t believe this is happening. I never would have imagined going for a swim would cause this. People do water sports with their dogs and you would think this type of problem would be something you hear about.

The vet does sound pretty positive and they usually don't/can't beat around the bush so that's good news. Continued prayers sent.

I just now found this. Shoot! I really don't recall hearing of this happening before. Thoughts with handsome Jasper for sure!

We were able to bring Jasper home. He obviously still has pneumonia but he no longer needs oxygen and was breathing okay on his own.

We need to find a cardiologist to take an ultrasound of his heart. Im hoping that the abnormality they saw was due to the respiratory distress from the incident, and not a major issue. He has a couple weeks or recovery for his lungs.
Vets said he was a wonderful boy and they wanted to keep him.

Thank you for your prayers. I didn’t want to post when we got him yesterday out of respect for our wonderful member Firestar Dobe who unfortunately had to say goodbye to Dauntless. We all know how important these dogs are to us.

I am so happy to hear Jasper is home! We still need to keep that watch word hope a little longer! Fingers crossed that his heart and lungs will be fine. You and Jasper will still be in our thoughts and prayers until he is back to 100%.
Thank you for your kind consideration of not posting yesterday. It was a heart wrenching day. I wouldn't have been upset or minded if you had posted, because you put a big smile on my face with the news that Jasper is back home and on the road to recovery! I am glad that you still have him, and Dauntless is probably looking down and saying "keep fighting Jasper"!
