Hello all, I recently picked up my boy dobie last week he’s now 7 weeks and has been great besides day 1-3. He’s been picking up on treats and potty training very well and he stopped his food aggression quickly once he realized I was there to help. He’s been an all around great dog especially for 7 weeks. Just wanted to know any tips or tricks that helped you guys out around this phase.

Oh boy.
7wks?

Well, puppy phase is cute and fun but get ready for the DoberShark. Lots of nipping, biting and chewing- not to mean or undisciplined, it’s just what they do. This is a very challenging phase that most owners get frustrated quickly because their teeth are very sharp.

Read, research, read this site- puppy forum on how to train and redirect his actions. Lots of great information out there.

Good luck and welcome from Louisiana

Welcome! Be sure to check out all the puppy threads on here...I don't know how to post them so you can click on them, but there is a TON of information, and others experiences to gleen from! Love the little red boy! Name? Look forward to hearing all about him!

Welcome from Indiana. They should stay with their litter until at least 8 weeks and ideally longer. They learn so much including bite inhibition so be prepared to get chewed on! The ones I have that stay longer with their littermates I've never had teeth laid on me much. Its amazing how much they learn from their littermates! Never too young to start training. Just replace your arm from those teeth with a toy and praise with good boy and play.

"No!"
"No bite!"
"Leave it!"
Get used to saying at least these three phrases for a long time! 😁 LOL Just like a human baby they are going to want to taste everything. And I mean everything! They have to learn what to leave alone or you are going to have someone who is eating everything, including things that could seriously injure him. Even the blanket that you have him in, if he starts tearing at that and eating the pieces. Watching him like a hawk is going to be your daily job. 😉You'd be surprised how quickly they can swallow something. Especially when they think you're going to take it away! He will learn quickly if you are consistent and simple in your commands.

We got our Annie this past Mother's Day at 9 weeks old. She is our 4th Doberman but our first puppy Doberman in many, many years! Even though she is still trying to pick up things outside that she shouldn't, I'd say the first two weeks were the worst. Just like a baby, everything was new and she wanted to touch everything! And then eat it of course.🤦‍♀️ so just watch his every move and praise heavily when he does something right. Let him also know that biting is not an option. If you do a search on our board you will find lots of hints on how to deal with that. I'll never forget the time Annie first put her mouth on my hand and I was very surprised that she didn't clamp down! She just was kind of mouthing and not really biting. That's not to say she hasn't tried a couple of times since or that her sharp baby teeth didn't accidentally cut and draw blood, but she was pretty good about not actually biting. And she knows what, no bite, means. :tap:

Get him a few toys that are safe for a puppy and if anything looks like he's chewing it up into pieces take it away. I swear by the bully stick as a pacifier! Annie loves them and it's the only chew stick that I trust.

Good luck!! Is this your first puppy or first doberman?

Welcome from Minnesota!
Agree with everything said so far. I have had good luck with chew toys from the natural section of the pet food store. Things like Buffalo horns, and goat horns. They seem expensive to buy but they last a long time and seem to hold their appeal to the pups! Yak cheese didn't last long for us, though. Also, more than one of us here has gone through an unstable puppy tummy stage, when they can get diarrhea for no apparent reason. Canned pumpkin (not the pie filling, just pumpkin) and unflavored/unsweetened greek yogurt have been my go-to remedies for that.

I think y'all are going to do just great! Ask any questions on the forum, lots of helpful people here with I don't know how many years of collective Doberman experience, but it's many many years.

Hey guys sorry for the late reply as you can see he’s doing a toll on me lol, Thanks so much to everyone who has sent me tips they all have been put to use. We got the hang of his biting now he can at least tell that he shouldnt bite at all just some nibbling. Actually a lot of nibbling not some but it’s ok! He’s just my little boy

First puppy and first Doberman! I’m still in college but I have a WFH job now and my schedule has been easy to have a puppy so I made the best decision I ever had and got Drako. I definitely am going to check out the bully sticks as well cause im sure he’ll love it. I got him a good amount of toys that we cycle through and he’s been good with it. I didn’t respond when I seen this but thank you!

After reading this thread the only tips I can say is?
Patients, my friend😂
Lots of it.
And remember you are the human, he is a dog. You are smarter than he is, although at times he will make you question that😂😂😂
