Perception of dobes in Spain

@DracoDobie Hey, I joined so I could post here. I couldn’t send you a DM. How is the dobe culture in Spain? I’m considering moving to Spain or Portugal but have a cropped dog and I’m worried of receiving public hate or fear, or having to force a muzzle on my dog outdoors. Can the dog not participate in any recreational sports either if it’s cropped?

Hey there!!

Dobermanns have to be muzzled and always kept on a short leash in some parts of Spain, in others they don't, depends on the state you're living in.
For example here in Madrid where I live Draco isn't included in the dangerous breeds list, but he is included in Andalucia for example, stupid I know.

The general public is scared of Dobermanns, even more if cropped and docked. So expect a lot of comments like "Those dogs are dangerous, their brain never stops growing and they go crazy and kill their owners!" "They lose their sight and sense of smell and attack their owners!" I suffer from stupid comments on a daily basis, and he isn't even cropped. People are so ignorant, just don't listen to them.

They can participate in sports as far as I know! I've seen multiple cropped Dobies doing stuff such as IGP, Agility, Obedience...there shouldn't be a problem with it!

You can ask me anything you want, and welcome to Doberman Chat!

Thanks for the response! I still can’t reply to your DM, I’m not ignoring you. Do you have any idea how Dobes are perceived in Portugal? My partner is a lifelong surfer so Madrid is likely not where we end up 😆 I was looking into North Spain, Galicia, SS also… but maybe Portugal is more dog friendly all around?

I think when you're a new member, you're not allowed to DM anyone for a while, so it is a matter of just sticking around for a bit.

Wow, crossing the ocean is a big move! Let us know how your Dobe handles it, and in particular if he's allowed on the beaches. We live in a medium sized city near mountains, so I'm always eager to see Dobes in and around water.

Do we know which areas in Spain that Dobermans need to be muzzled and which areas they don’t.

I live in a very rural area and currently elk my dog in the orange groves. I would love a Doberman, but I really don’t ent to have to have it muzzled every time we are out. I cn u der stand when in crowded areas like in town etc. but on the campo, would it be I forced?
