Hello! I'm still preparing for a doberman puppy and already went down the rabbit hole of dog kibble nutrition twice and did extensive note taking (if anyone wants a pic I can post). I knew exactly what I was planning on feeding which was Orijen ancient grains but now that Mars has bought (or is buying in early 2023) Champion which owns Orijen and Acana, I'm not so sure. A lot of people are jumping off the Orijen wagon because Mars gets a bad rep and might change the formula. I currently feed my old Sheltie Orijen senior and was planning on transitioning my cats to Orijen. Let me know your thoughts please even if you don't feed Orijen. Thank you!

You are correct about Mars buying out a ton of dog food and vet industries so I refuse to buy anything Mars related. A lot of people jumped off the Orijen food a few years ago after changing the ingredients from what used to be one of the best kibbles out there to just a so-so one now.

Inushuk would be my recommendation on starting a new puppy. We still feed Diamond extreme athelete but I see such great things in this food I will be switching on my next puppy.

I've been feeding my girl Muenster Milling ancient grains. Family owned company and made in the US. I started feeding it about a year or more ago after seeing a lot of fellow doberman friends trying it out and being really happy with it. I am very happy with it too, my girl only needs to eat 2c a day and her coat is always shiny. We rotate between proteins each month.
To answer your question, if it were me Id be looking around like you are and switching if not now then definitely if any ingredients change.

Your comments 3 years ago convinced me to start Asha on Diamonds ALS chicken/rice and when she started working pretty hard I mixed it 50/50 with Diamond extreme athlete. Great reviews on Dog Food Advisor, and looking at Blaze, what's not to like? Saved me a ton of $. I also top with raw in her evening meal, which includes about 2 oz. beef heart (highest natural source of Taurine).

I get it at a local grocery store. Never have seen it at the big chain groceries. It's usually a half or quarter of a fresh heart. The outside has a layer of fat you have to cut off, but the rest is solid extremely rich red meat, no marbling, just solid meat. I've read not to give them very much at once because it's so rich and could cause loose stools, so I just add a couple ounces to her raw mix. Every few weeks I spend couple of hours making trays of (human grade) raw mix variety, then freeze them so I don't have to deal with it every day.

We used to feed Orijen and Acana before switching to a Raw Diet. We feed Raw and haven't feed Kibble for well over 10yrs.
Yes, Champion foods changed after they built (in 2016) the brand-new manufacturing plant in Kentucky.
But you can always check out these sites to look for good, rated Kibble.
If we were to switch back some things I would follow are.
No pet food formulas that have NO Corn, Wheat or Soy
I would trust Susan Thixton sites.
Susan Thixton has gone to many AAFCO meetings over the years. She is an awesome advocate for our pets. You will learn a lot about pet foods on this site.
This is also one of her sites.
She does come out with a yearly trusted food list. It's worth the $10

By my standards, optimal amount of ANIMAL protein in a dog’s diet is 75-85%. Cats are even more carnivorous and 90-95% of their diet should be ANIMAL protein.
Commercial dog food is only required to include 22% protein BUT this can include protein from plant matter that is not as digestible. A study brought to my attention by Dogs First showed of protein stated in the kibble, less than 75% of it was actually available to the animal. Krogdahl et al. (2004) tested a range of different dry food diets. They found that Eukanuba Puppy stated 27.9% protein, only 20.3% was actually available; Proplan Puppy stated 26.2% protein, only 20.1% was available to the test animals; Royal Canin Puppy stated 21.7% protein, only 16.7% was available; Hill’s Puppy stated 26.8% protein, only 20.8% was available to the animal.
Big pet food companies use less animal protein because it’s expensive and they want to make more money, but you physically can’t make an extruded kibble with 75% animal protein using current manufacturing and processing techniques. I took a kibble manufacturing course at KSU to learn the process myself.
