New food? Pooping a lot.

Currently feeding taste of the wild salmon puppy food. It rates 4.5 stars on that dog food rater website. However he poops 4-5 times a day and it’s usually click work. He’s fed at 5am and 5pm. So he poops at 5:15am, 730am, 515pm, and around 8pm. Sometimes there will be an extra poop around 9. It seems to me that it may be somewhat excessive.

Is there another brand of food or flavor I can switch to to decrease the amount of pooping? Also all poops are solid.

Guess you don’t have to worry about his gut motility with his bumper crops of poop. Lol
Usually when there is a lot of poop, I would question whether his body is getting the benefit of the food with so much being processed out. Usually you would see this amount of poop with a diet high in fiber. The less amount of poop, the more his body is able to digest and use the food instead of expelling mass amounts out.
I know my dogs only poop once or twice a day since I put them on raw and the poop is very small. On kibble they would poop 2-3 times a day.
While TOTW is a good food some dogs don’t do as well as others on it.

It may be a time for you to just transition over to a raw diet and see how he does on this.
Morning and afternoon raw, evening meal of kibble until he is fully transitioned over.

What type of raw food? I have a bag of raw food in the freezer. Northwest naturals. Think I should transition to that? He also eats morning and dinner

Because of the recall with Northwest Naturals I would make sure what you have is not one of the ones from NW Naturals that was recalled. Check your manufacturer codes and compare to the codes of the recalled food.

It’s not on the recall list. How do you suggest I change over the diet?

Feed raw in the morning and kibble at night. See how his tummy handles the raw in the morning for a week, then start evening meals with raw if there are not any GI issues.

Be sure to feed 3% of his optimum adult body weight. If you think his optimum weight should be 75 lbs then feed approximately 1lb of raw in the morning and his kibble at night.
Once you transition completely to raw you would feed 2 1/4lbs a day split between two meals. If he is losing weight up your amount of raw by 1/4 to 1/2 lb a day until you see his weight stabilize. Then you can adjust from there according to his needs. On very active days I will give my pups a little more raw and if they are less active I give a bit less. I haven’t had this problem though because they are wide open every single day.:pullhair:

I've heard quite a few dogs don't do as well on the TOTW salmon as other formulas so it wouldn't hurt to try high prairie or wetlands, which are rated a little higher than the salmon. Of course if you plan to transition to raw that probably doesn't do you much good.

Mine did well on TOTW but it gave them horrible gas. Even their vet was gagging, along with other clients in the reception room. It was quite embarrassing as people were staring at me.:bag:

My hb gave Kaiser a piece of stronger cheese than what he is used to. The gas was outrageous :spit:

We were upstairs when the smell hit us. We both rushed down and examined the house thinking he had dropped a load inside. It was near his bedtime. The next morning the laundry room where he sleeps...stank! I lit matches, used incense. We finally gave up and opened the doors...in the cold...to get the stink out. No more cheese!

Fully agree have not heard the best about taste of the wild with dobies at all. IMO there’s better kibble for close to equal price (in my area at least). Personally I feed orijen/acana and use nulo as a very last resort. But I believe it was @Kaiser2016 who was feeding acana and found it to rich for his boy, so each dobies diet is different. It’s almost trial and error.

It can be overwhelming to pick a new food. A good place to start is price point. It will help you pick out a high quality food at a price that works for you.

His breeder recomended to wait till he’s a little olde for raw. I’m going to use up the rest of the salmon and switch to either chicken or beef and see how he does on that. Or possibly switch to acana. The 5-7 poops a day is getting to be too much. Thanks everyone for the advice.
