Nail Trim advice?

Darn thing. Didn’t mean to post twice.
Well, that picture is worth looking at twice. OMG. In Ashas 3 years I've seen her on her back once, in the heat of the summer asleep, trying to keep cool. If she is even semi-conscious she will NOT be seen on her back. (except flopping back & forth on the grass). I've tried to teach her "roll over" and can't get that done either.

Ive always had problems with this & usually ended up it with a trip to the vets or more recently groomers. However about 3 months ago my regular groomer let me down & so in desperation I thought I’d give the nearly 4 year old Luna a go with clippers. She’s not been an easy dog & remembering how long it took for her to accept being towelled & her paws dried, I feared for the worst. After buying the best quality clippers available to me & watching a couple of youtube clips, I set out some top rewards (pieces of roast ox heart) & set to it with lots of praise.
I can’t say it’s her favourite activity but she trusted me & puts up with it…clip..reward..clip reward..clip clip reward.
No more trips to the groomer now

One of my earlier Dobes decided at an early age she was having none of this nail clipping nonsense & learned
how to crop her own by nibbling them & keeping them short🙂

Lol! I must admit that as she has gotten bigger and stronger, my husband has not been able to encourage that position very often!

I haven't tried to teach roll over, but seeing Kaiser on his back was very rare in the early years. I don't think it was/is a matter of trust/bonding, but during the pandemic, something shifted and he will go on his back for belly rubs from me, but not from my hb who I would say he is bonded to more. So it may be an age thing? He will roll over on to his back in the grass, but that seems more of a happiness/contentment response.

Same here. We always had Kaiser's nails Dremeled by someone else, but when the pandemic started, we were on our own. We made a slow introduction to the Dremel at home, offered his favorite scrambled eggs as a reward, now doing nails is a breeze. He will even lay down on the floor in a ready position almost like he is looking forward to it, similar to @AnnV's pic.

So far the only method that works is three people holding her down and one person trimming. We get thru it .Once its over she gets a treat and all is forgiven.

Choose a day when you have lots of time. One foot, one nail, treat, relax. Repeat. If it's really a stressful thing, just do the 4 nails on one foot, do one foot per day - three days off then one foot per day the next week. Tons of treats and when you're done for the day on nails, have a party - like if ball or tug is her favorite thing go straight to that so she has fun at the end of every single event of doing nails.

Jazz has been good about nails, but I have accidentally quicked her a couple of times. She then becomes nervous. (understandably). I found that doing one nail only, praising and letting it go at that worked much better than insisting on getting more done. The reward is stopping the stressful process before it becomes a battle. Just do one and let your body relax and be happy and your Dobe tends to pick this up too becoming more relaxed about nail clipping time.
