Ok not doberman, but health related... misty is getting old, and has all sorts of lumps and bumps. We noticed a "matted" hard spot on her a few days ago but it looked like a scab so I just let it be. My oldest just yelled for me, she has a legit HOLE and her hair is falling out around it20180505_170436.webp . Really can't afford the emergency vet if I dont HAVE to... anyone have any clue what this is? Can I treat at home, can it wait until Monday for regular vet, or should we go to the ER vet? Any advice is appreciated!

Ok and sorry, not sure why exactly it put my pic in the middle of my text either lol...

Where on her body is it? Does it seem to be painful or is she scratching at it? Is she eating and drinking normally? Are there any other areas of redness on the skin? My daughters Corgi Jax is 14yrs old and he had something that looks just like this. It turned out to be a staph infection of the skin. Staph infections can be difficult to treat as they are very resistant to antibiotics. The only way to know for sure is go to the vet. If it is not causing pain, itching, lethargy, mud butt, or vomiting you can probably wait until Monday.

@Firestar Dobe it on her back, near her tail. I'll grab another pic so you can see where. She doesn't seem bothered at all, eating her dinner just fine as o type actually. No scratching, and acting normal. Shes lazy anyway (almost 11 year old basset hound) but not any more lethargic that normal for her.

1st pic kinda looks like a puncture wound. How deep is it? Or am I seeing it wrong?.?..

Sometimes, the skin can be punctured and the skin will flap back over the the wound. The hard spot would be serous fluid that drained out and dried.

Any green goo? Does it smell bad? Is she running a fever?

If indeed a puncture wound, I have had this before. If you can’t or don’t want to go to vet, this is what I have done before from consulting wound care experts at the hospital I work at.

Cut/shave the area around the area. If green goo or yellowish slough, then get some wound care cleaner and soak the wound. Use a wash rag and/or medium tooth brush to scrape ALL the green goo/yellowish slough out until you see a nice slightly bloody wound bed. The ideal look for a clean wound bed is reddish meat like a raw steak.

Get some quality antibiotic ointment and put in wound. Bandage and cover if possible.

The wound care experts also told me to not allow to scab over. If it scabs over and there is still some infection in there, it will fester and get worse and you won’t know it. Try and let it heal from inside out.

The wound I treated was very red and nasty nasty looking- green goo and yellowish slough. I used Vashe wound cleaner and Silvasorb antimicrobial gel. The next day it looked 90% better. I did the above stated for 2 weeks before I felt comfortable to allow it to scab over.

Of course, see a vet if you feel the need to.

Hope all goes well.

Aww poor girl. :( It looks to me like she caught it on something or injured it in some way since it does look like a flap of skin on the left side in the first photo.

My phone must be flaking because I only see the picture a few comments up with a hand in it ...

So ignore me :p I'd still check for a temp though. Just to be safe.

Thank you everyone!! It does sort of look like a puncture, which is what freaked me out! Shes slow moving, and I dont see anything inside or out that she could have snagged it on. There isn't a flap of skin in person, I think it might just be the angle of the pic that makes it look that way. No green goo, there seems like a little bit of white in her fur around it, but mostly just blood. No foul smell, other than her normal hound stink! :wtf3: I did clean it with peroxide and hibiclens solution earlier. What temp would I look for? I'll have to see if we have an extra thermometer I think I'll get in trouble if I use the one the kids use haha

Oh, and watch for signs of dehydration. Keep a close eye on eating and eliminating. As well as energy (I know, hard to gauge with seniors).

If you get any incling something's up, I'd go to the vet. But that's just me. I'm paranoid when it comes to infections - mostly because the sooner they are caught, the better and they can be easy to overlook at beginning stages.

Ruptured sebaceous cyst or ruptured abscess. It’s an area that Misty can reach to chew on it.
With it being a hard lump yesterday, that’s what leads me to believe it’s one of the above.
