Micro prong collars

Other than the post i gave Apollo - a couple other things to remember.

1) you will NEVER get the right size choke chain. It will always be to big for the neck, it has to be to get over the head and that is why it will always sit low.

2) way to many people use the choker the wrong way. I see a lot - A LOT of people at these pet expos and out and about not using the choke in the "P" form. They have it reversed which basically will tighten but not loosen.

on the side, yesterday at the dogpark, i saw the funniest thing and really had to shake my head. there were a woman with two little mini pin's and both were wearing a itzy bitzy prong collar, i never saw so a little prong's and i was wondering why to heck she has them on so very small dogs

LOL, really they were so mini, didn't know they make prongs that small, why would someone use a prong and a little dog like that LMAO :)

I totally agree with you on that....my husband is always checkin other people if they have a choke on their pets and telling them the correct way to use them....good point

LOL! Were they small people too? :)

That would be the micro-prong you saw, which is what we have for Della.
I'll attach a pic of the micro next to Boris' regular prong, which is the 2.25 mm and the smallest non-micro prong out there.

Jan is that a dime in your picture?? That collar must be small enough it would almost look like jewelry!! It wouldn't look so menacing either would it? It is just when I see a big dog with the big menacing looking prong collars on it gives the impression of a dog that is hard to control and that is not the impression I want to make since the breed gets enough of "those looks" already.

nope it was much smaller,i'm telling you,i never ever saw so a itzy bitzy collar in my whole live, you know the size of the xs collars you get in the petstore, just as a prong

You are so right Titan about choke chains being too big once they slip over the head of a dog and about people using them wrong too!

I started a thread that addresses both issues about 5 months ago, and maybe it would be useful to post it again for the always growing community:SwinginStar:

Jan did you get your Micro Prong collar at a pet store or is it something that would have to be ordered off a specialty web site??

I thought Patwit had a good explanation- that the little dogs might choke themselves on regular collars... As hard as it might be to believe (since little dogs seem to get away with murder most of the time)- another possibility is that the owners realize that little dogs need as much discipline as big dogs do and are using the same tools we use (only scaled down).

they were there yesterday and i ask her why her mini pin's would wear prongs, her explanation was, they would not behave on the leash:o
come one woman how hard is it to handle two little min pin's on a leash? a 2lb dog????<_<

I think you are missing the point:confused: Or maybe I'm not reading you right... It's easy to overpower a little dog. Heck, I could lift at least 8 of those little guys off the ground by the leashes with one hand. But getting control over a dog is different than overpowering a dog. Prong collars serve two purposes- self correction (in which a dog reaches the end of the leash and gets an unpleasant experience) and handler administered corrections (in which the dog knows what is required of it, chooses not to obey, and gets a correction from the handler via the prong collar).

I'm thinking the owner of the min pins is doing the right thing by treating the dogs like any dogs rather than "little" dogs. Little dogs need just as much discipline as big dogs even though they can't pull as hard or bite as hard. I bet if there were an accurate count taken on aggressive dog bites in this country including ones that didn't draw blood, little dogs would top all the "bad" breeds like APBTs, GSDs, Rotties, etc.... Without "rules, boundaries, and limitations" (Cesar) any dog gets psychotic, dominant, and makes itself a target for other dogs that might want to calm it down or put it in its place. Plus they just plain suck to live with.

i been watching them for awhile now and i think she just don't know what to do and how to train dogs and she is one what use the prong no as help just to get a hold of the dogs,i see that alot in the park.they don't know how to use it right.
those min pins are behaving very well in the park, they are not agressive adn not afraid when they are there,so i think using the prongs on them isn't nessary at all.they might need some obedience class thats all,its always easy to put a choker or prong on a dog,but she should work with them, not make it easy on them..hope it comes right now lol

:slapme::slapme: What the heck was I thinking??? I guess I forget sometimes that there are ignorant people in the world. I'm surrounded by knowledgeable people in my daily life, and I really don't get out much in public. It really didn't occur to me that the woman you were talking about is an idiot!
