Mammary tumors

Reckless is 9 and still intact, never bred. J goes over her belly area all the time and last week felt a couple of bb size bumps under one area and a little swelling under another area, both near a nipple. Next day took her in and vet agreed biopsy is the first step, did surgery and sent off tissue to be diagnosed. Reckless has had a surprise side affect of continuous bleeding out of the stitched area - has been gone back in for that, Vitamin K prescribed, then today had to be restitched because the bleeding/leaking prevented the raw edges to heal together - so had to be re-freshed and stitched again. Complications are not fun. Soaked bloody bandages changed every 12 hours for a week now. But it's better since the vitamin k so here's hoping the healing will be normal this time. Report came back, 3 areas where tissue (and one nipple) was removed were diagnosed, 2 benign and 1 was stage 1 malignant. Prognosis is good since caught early, but diligence is recommended to keep an eye on the belly area ALWAYS and any lumps or bumps immediately tended to by the vet.

I chose to keep my bitch intact and will probably face the same some day, if she is blessed to miss heart disease. The spay decision is a damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you leave them intact the chance of mammary tumors is more than likely, if you spay then other cancers are more than likely. :(

Abbey, my parents Golden, just had a few mammary tumors removed too. She's 9 and they were malignant. Pretty much if you don't spay after the first heat cycle, spaying later won't prevent any more tumors so yeah. Only benefit to spaying now would be to not worry about Pyo if you aren't breeding.

Wishing the best for Abbey ❤️

Yeah, it really does feel like being between a rock and a hard spot.

I'm glad you caught it early.

I do plan to have Olive spayed after she's 2 but that's because we have an intact male too.
