Itching, paw chewing and yeasty in arm pits and groin area

Reddobedady

Novitiate
I rescued my red dobe 2 years ago April.. Wonderful boy, roughly 2yr at the time. In August 2014 we bought a house and within 2 weeks he was red in his groin area. Our friend and trainer said it was from the food our something. We have tried different food. No change. Took him to the vet and got some meds, it helped but not for long. Our other dogs are fine it's just him. He scratces and licks all the time making him raw. I love him dearly. The vet bills are killing me but I don't want to pump him full of crap I can buy online. He is my life. I'm a combat vet from Iraq and he is my life line. Without proper training he wakes me up during my nightmares, my rock when my life falls apart. I'm sure his life is not in danger from his itching but his peace of mind is. I feel powerless to help him. If anyone has some advice I will surely take it. Thank you.

Have you had a allergy test from your vet? I have a red male and he also had skin issues. After we tested him we knew exactly what
foods he could not eat and after 2 months his skin cleared up.

Kaia isn't a red but she has major allergies. She is on daily medication to help and weekly steroids. It's the best combination we have found. What does the vet have him on now?

Awww... He sounds like a very special dobe doing what dobes do best! The connection seems to be the new house in my mind. New plants in the yard? Something about the new house triggering the scratching? I doubt you changed foods when you moved...

Hi! Thank you for your service to our country!!! :ty:
Im sure your vet already covered this but for inexpensive temporary relief, you can give him benadryl- dosage is 1mg/lb.
Things to think about are any changes in cleaning products that would touch the skin like laundry, floor cleaner etc that could cause a contact dermatitis. Also, in the new house were there rugs there from previous owner that could cause some allergenic issues.
Food allergy/sensitivities could have developed. I have been dealing with this myself as of late and found this article very helpful.
Pet food allergies

Also, environmental allergies can be culprit as well. Did you move to a new location? Maybe different trees, grasses, dust etc etc.
Does your boy have any problems with his ears, eyes, feet, digestion? Even minor changes?

Sounds like Atopy (Atopic dermatitis).
Grass, pollen, mold spores, dust etc.
changes in the enviornment can bring it on. It would be a matter of finding what is different in your enviornment now as popes to your last home. Allergy testing is not always accurate. I had my girl tested and began immunotherapy, however it didn't really assist since we later determined she had color dilute alopecia. Cleaning your dog off after being outside, shampoos and leave in rinses can calm the inflamed areas and of course medication. It's important to get a handle on it now before it becomes chronic. Is there any hair loss yet or just excoriation of the skin?

Welcome! I don't have anything useful to add that would be better than what has been said. Just want to say welcome, and I wish a speedy solution for you and your great friend.

Forgot to say Welcome from Florida and as @Prushanks said; Thank you for your service to our great country!!

Apple cider vinegar rinses (leave on) can help with yeast and calming irritated skin. Frequent bathing with a medicated shampoo followed by a leave on calming rinse but it does sound as though he needs some medication to give him a jump start.

Wishing you and your boy the very best!'

You've been given some great advice. I'd just like to add that since you moved when it happened it is likely an environmental issue and not just outside. If he's allergic to the soap they used to clean the carpets (or the carpets themselves) or something along those lines it could make sense that he'd break out from laying on them. You definitely want to try to get a handle on this before his scratching and licking becomes a habit. That's much harder to resolve.

Since he is already on meds, you probably shouldn't introduce something new without first checking with your vet. I just want to add that Benadryl is safe for dogs and the dose is 1mg per pound.

He has a vet app on Friday so I will see about that. Thank you.

We think it has something to do with the house too. Just not sure what.

New house has no carpet at all but is in a new town so that might be some of it.

Wilderness blue Buffalo.
I'd take him off blue :/ it's a terrible food with a ton a recalls. It's pretty much over priced beneful. Good foods to look into that a lot of people feed on here are taste of the wild ( I used to feed :) ),Orijen , Acana. I don't feed kibble anymore but these are good brand with quality ingredients.
